The MVP debate has fired up again! Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, and Joe Burrow – these are some names that come to mind instantly. The fans are divided. But the major competition is between the Ravens QB and Bills QB. Both have done an outstanding job in the field. While we’ve got around a month to officially know who ends up with the title, analysts and NFL legends are coming up with their choices well in advance. Now the clamors are about to peak, courtesy of a certain Cam Jordan.

On New Year’s Eve, the NFL uploaded a video of the Saints’ OT Khalen Saunders talking to veteran DE Cam Jordan. The DE wholeheartedly endorsed Lamar Jackson for this year’s MVP and said, “Lamar Jackson and the crazy numbers he’s put up this year, and they’re still like MVP, could be Saquon, and it could be Josh Allen you could be blind as hell.” Those are bold claims indeed. But how high do they really stack up? To get a better idea of how the QBs have performed the past season, let’s have a look at their numbers.

If numbers mean anything – and as in most cases, they definitely do – Lamar Jackson has performed better than Josh Allen in almost all aspects. But there’s one other aspect to it – the story that the numbers can’t tell. The Bills don’t have any major superstar in their O-line, while the Ravens have one by the name of Derrick Henry. With 1,783 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, he is also a solid MVP prospect. So, the scenario is different for both QBs.

Regardless, Jordan doubled down on his MVP stance for Lamar Jackson. In fact, he even dived into why the league did not want him to win the MVP this year and added, “It’s like you watching LeBron (James) or Mike (Jordan). They could win it every year but they’re gonna throw somebody else in it because that somebody else needs to disrupt the flow. But sometimes exactly you don’t have to disrupt the flow. I get it. Give it (to Lamar Jackson). I saw his numbers. They’re better than last year. Give (him).”

That’s true. In 2023, the Ravens QB finished with 307 of 457 passes (67.2% completion rate) in 3,678 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Even in the rushing department, he had 5 touchdowns in 821 yards. But the debate rages on. What happens next is going to be a tale told by time.

NFL world biased to Josh Allen over Lamar Jackson

Former Cowboys QB and NFL on CBS broadcaster Tony Romo also echoed Jordan’s sentiment. He chose Josh Allen as his MVP choice and said, “I think they’re tied in my brain. I think that Josh Allen might get the edge only because Lamar’s had two. If Josh had two, you’d going to side with the guy who doesn’t have one. That’s just human nature, in my opinion.

However, the award cannot be given to two players. Former linebacker and NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho was clear in his choice. During The Facility show, he said, “Simply put, Josh Allen has to do just as much, if not more, with less.” That’s interesting.

ESPN First Take host Ryan Clark also highlighted that voters too, may favor Josh Allen over Lamar Jackson as he has already won it twice. But not everyone is supporting the Bills QB. Many have expressed their liking for the Ravens QB too.

During the December 31 episode of the Scoop City podcast, NFL insider Dianna Russini claimed she would vote for Jackson. While comparing both QBs, she said, “I am leaning Lamar. I don’t think Josh Allen did anything this weekend to make me go, ‘OK, he stole this thing.’” So the fight is on.

For the quarterbacks, their plan is simple. Go after the big prize. Super Bowl! They haven’t won the Super Bowl yet. So the MVP candidacy will take care of itself if they win the trophy. It would be interesting, though.
