The Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ decision to ignore Derrick Henry backfired on him after the Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens RB hung up 151 yards and two touchdowns on America’s team, and sure enough, Jones ended up in controversies yet again. When the media questioned Jerry Jones, he happily took all the blame on himself.
The crazy thing about all this is Derrick Henry was super interested in the Dallas Cowboys, and the Ravens were his second option. Adding more fuel to the fire, Mike Florio decided to give his take on the situation, but the angle he brought up had to do with Stephen Jones, the CEO, and not the billionaire owner. Florio’s qualms? “What was Stephen doing at the time Jerry made those decisions?”
What exacerbated the situation was the Cowboys’ decision to wait until the last moment to give Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb record-breaking contracts. Should Stephen Jones have advised his father to take swift action? Per Florio, the Cowboys owner waited a long time to make some cap space, which he could have used to sign Henry, but he didn’t.

“I have yet to see any clips on social media of anybody suggesting, ‘Where’s Stephen? What’s he doing to counteract Jerry being too cheap and too shortsighted to recognize?’ ‘We’re going to pay these guys anyways. Why don’t we pay them at a time that will give us the cap space that we can use to maybe sign Derrick Henry,’” Florio said on NFL on NBC.
Even CBS blatantly pointed out that Jones “gaslit” the Cowboys fan base by delaying the signing of CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott. After all, the Cowboys saved $9.25 million and $10.5 million in cap space, respectively, by extending them. They could have easily signed Derrick Henry because Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn haven’t shown much of a spark yet.

Is Jerry Jones' decision about Derrick Henry a smart move or a desperate attempt to save face?

So, is Jerry Jones protecting his son? Why didn’t they sign Derrick Henry when he could have easily done it? Well, the answer to that question sounded like a “load of crap” to Florio.
Jerry Jones’ answer to not signing Derrick Henry
Things could have been great if Derrick Henry was on the Cowboys’ roster, right? Well, for Jones, this was an implausible choice because he found the price tag on Derrick Henry to be expensive. For one, Jones likes the personnel he has in his arsenal and was willing to pass up on the player who is a leading figure in the NFL at his position.

“I like our personnel,” Jones said. “We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry.” The CBS article mentioned earlier pointed out how the personnel that Jones “likes” ranked 3oth in the NFL with only 73.7 rushing yards per game. The entire Cowboys running back department has 170 rushing yards and one rushing TD on 49 attempts this season. Henry, on the other hand, is a beast in his own right.
“I was like, man, if I’m not in Tennessee or I don’t get to go to Dallas, I’d love to be a Raven,” Henry said on the Pivot podcast in early April.

The Ravens RB currently ranks fifth in the league with his 281 rushing yards and leads the NFL with four rushing TDs by the end of Week 3. If you’re convinced that the Cowboys couldn’t afford Henry, his 2024 cap number with the Ravens is around $5.1 million after giving him a 2-year, $16 million deal with $9M in guarantees.
