The NFL market is currently high, with most of the players, including quarterbacks like Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa, getting well paid. But what about the reigning Super Bowl winner, Patrick Mahomes? Especially when the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has proven again and again.
Mahomes is currently getting an “average of $45 million on the 10-year, $450 million deal he signed in 2020.” It reportedly means he is significantly underpaid compared to other top NFL quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence, who are making over $50 million annually.
This raises the question of what Mahomes’ true value should be, given his exceptional talent and impact on the games. On one hand, the quarterback himself hasn’t shown interest in any pay raise, as he just wants to be with the team and win the championship. But on the other hand, NFL analyst Chris Broussard has advice for the 28-year-old and the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes told to surpass Shohei Ohtani’s monster contract!
In a recent episode of First Things First, on July 29, 2024, NFL analysts Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, Eric Mangini and Kevin Wildes discussed Patrick Mahomes’ current contract and whether he’s underpaid or not.
During the discussion, Broussard highlighted that he believes Mahomes “should be the highest paid not just in the NFL; he should be the highest paid athlete in (other) sports. I mean he is the only one in the top three sports that’s winning it consistently….I mean football, basketball, baseball and other American Sports. Like he’s got a chance to win it every year.”
Currently, baseball star Shohei Ohtani has the biggest contract in American sports, boasting a massive deal worth $700 million for 10 years. Hence, Broussard argued that Mahomes, being a consistent winner and performing at the top level continuously, should be paid over all other top athletes in American sports.

Patrick Mahomes isn’t sweating his paycheck, even though it might seem like he’s underpaid compared to other NFL stars. Recently, young quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa ($212.4 million) and Jordan Love ($220 million) landed big deals that put them among the top earners in the league. Despite these impressive contracts, Mahomes, who averages $45 million annually from his 10-year, $450 million contract signed in 2020, isn’t feeling slighted. Instead, he’s more focused on winning games and providing for his family.
When speaking to USA Today in a recent interview, Mahomes expressed, “I know every time a contract comes up, everybody looks at my APY (average per year) and everything like that. I’m doing pretty well myself. For me, it’s just about going out there trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I’m doing a great job of that.” He further revealed that he is happy to see other players getting out and making money, but for him, winning and teamwork still matter a lot.

Apart from this, let’s not forget that even with less average yearly pay compared to some peers, Mahomes’ contract remains one of the most lucrative in terms of total cash flow. His current deal ensures that he will receive $215.6 million over four years, more than any other player except Joe Burrow, who will get around $213.9 million. And obviously, he is fine with it!
Mahomes is currently seeing a bigger picture – achieving a 3-peat this year, and more and more Super Bowls. Thus for now, Mahomes is content with his position, knowing that his focus on team success and personal financial planning is paying off.
