The quarterback scene is filled with contract drama this pre-season. The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, was handed a handsome rise in his contract. The team signed him for a 5-year, $275 million pay ($55 million per year), making him one of the highest-paid QBs currently. However, as soon as he signed the massive contract, there seemed to be a seismic shift in the quarterback contract waves in the league.

Quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Jordan Love are sitting on their extensions, too. But as teams await the right moment, Lawrence’s deal has created a buzz in the league. It faced some criticism, and now, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio shared his opinion on the potential market values of the quarterbacks, hoping for Love’s high deal.

In Thursday’s episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Mike Florio discussed the contract scenes of the quarterbacks in line. When Eisen asked which quarterback would get the first $60 million-a-year annual value, Florio replied, “60 will be Jordan Love.” When Eisen asked, “This year?” Florio added, “It’s either going to be him or Dak” as quarterbacks who could command significant pay increases.

Looking at Love’s numbers from the previous season, the choice doesn’t seem very shocking in the current scenario. Playing 17 games for the Packers, Love made 372 completions in 579 attempts, along with 4,159 yardage and 32 touchdowns. Putting his best numbers on the board for the Cowboys, Prescott also had a story of almost success to narrate. His 410 completions in 590 attempts to cover 4,516 yards with 36 touchdowns was a scene to behold last season.

Based on numbers, Florio expressed that while he would guess Dak Prescott might be the next to get a high-value contract, there’s a chance Love could get there first, earning $60 million plus. If I had to guess, I would like to think it’s gonna be Dak. But there’s a chance it’ll be Jordan Love before that,” he said. Not only that! The analyst also brought up Josh Allen, noting that although he currently makes $45 million per year, he might push for a new deal to increase his earnings.

“At what point does Josh Allen go to Brandon Beane and go, ‘Dude?! I’m making$45 million, and it’s me and Mahomes,’” Florio surmised. With Patrick Mahomes’ contract recently restructured to improve his cash flow like Joe Burrow, Florio suggested that if anyone is in a position to demand a higher salary, it would be Josh Allen. He implied that a surprise contract extension for Allen could raise the market value for other quarterbacks as well.

Meanwhile, Rich Eisen believes that Brock Purdy and CJ Stroud could also set a new standard in the market with their updated contract. Apart from this, even if Love’s getting his new contract first among other quarterbacks, there is a problem with it, as per a report by Albert Breer.

The Packers might have a problem with Jordan Love’s contract

The Green Bay Packers are reportedly planning to make Jordan Love one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. General Manager Brian Gutekunst has set an unofficial deadline to finalize a contract extension with him before training camp starts on July 22 to avoid distractions. This situation is unique because Love had an exceptional second half of last season, throwing 18 touchdowns and only 1 interception during Green Bay’s 6-2 run to the playoffs. He achieved a near-perfect passer rating in the Packers’ 48-32 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the wild-card round.

This performance suggests that Jordan Love could be a franchise quarterback and a future MVP. However, the Packers are basing Love’s new contract on a relatively small sample size. Earlier in the season, Love and the offense struggled, making it an unusual situation. Now, Trevor Lawrence’s recent large contract extension adds complexity to the negotiations, as Love’s representatives will likely seek similar compensation. This is a significant concern for the Packers, given Love’s limited track record.

Journalist Albert Breer highlighted a potential problem: if the Miami Dolphins have concerns about Tua Tagovailoa’s health or the Packers have concerns about Love’s short track record, aiming for a contract structure like Lawrence’s could be problematic. Love, Tagovailoa, and Prescott, all represented by agents from Athletes First, might secure new deals this summer, potentially influencing each other’s contract terms.

Love is expected to earn substantial money, but the exact figure is uncertain. The Packers need to decide whether to match the league-high $55 million salary or see if Love would consider accepting less. These discussions are likely ongoing between the Packers and Love’s representatives. Love can highlight his MVP-level performance, while the Packers might argue it was only over an eight-game period. That said, reaching an agreement soon is in everyone’s best interest.
