The 49ers shocked the NFL on Sunday. Not because they trounced the home side Philadelphia Eagles 42-19, but because of how true the odds came out to be. But there was one moment during the third quarter aside from the win that has been shocking the fans since.
49ers’ linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Eagles’ security officer Dom DiSandro were both ejected from the game after the former attempted to punch the latter. Referring to that incident, Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni referred to the incident as ‘unfortunate’. He was also disappointed with it because according to him, Dom has been serving the same role for years.

Talking to the post-game conference, one reporter asked the head coach if there was any update from the league on the incident. Sirianni replied he was unaware of anything such, but had his own views to it. “I haven’t heard anything from the league. Dom is as good as they get in this business and I’m so thankful for him. You know his nature, he’s going to always try to diffuse situations. That’s what he does, that’s his job… and so you know, obviously unfortunate yesterday”, the head coach insisted that Dom had good intentions behind it, and he does his job well. Therefore, it was unfortunate according to him.
“But I know, in Dom’s heart he truly was trying to diffuse the situation right there. I’m sad that it came to what it came to, that anybody got thrown out of the game”, he further added that the outcome was sad because that’s not what Dom intended to do. “Again I know I’ve seen Dom have to do that before where he’s trying to diffuse the situation, that’s again what he does. And you know again, I know where Dom’s heart is and that is truly to diffuse a situation”, Sirianni explained Dom had been doing the same for years, and he has always been focused on his job.
What happened in the third quarter that led to the ejection of both entities? And the Eagles aren’t happy with the decision, either.

Lovingly called by the Eagles’ fans as ‘Big Dom’, the security officer tried to separate 49ers’ Greenlaw and Eagles’ Devonta Smith after the latter was tossed to the ground by the former and stood up face to face. After Dom pushed them to both sides and tried to get in between, Greenlaw threw a punch towards the veteran that just missed by a whisker. Dom and the rest of the players circling them were shocked, and the referees immediately intervened.
The reviews found both to be guilty of the altercation, and both were immediately sent off by the officials. However, the decision has not gone well with the Philly fans, who aren’t convinced about the security officer’s offense. Especially given he didn’t show any aggressiveness and only intended to handle the situation calmly.

Further investigation may slap added suspensions or fines to either side, but till then it remains an unfortunate incident that could be avoided.
