Miami Dolphins is due to readjust their roster. As several teams move forward with roster surgery, the Dolphins have a rather tough choice to make – Whether to franchise tag someone to buy time, restructure their deal, or release them to save some cap space. But whatever Stephen Ross-owned team does, they must keep Tua Tagovailoa and Christian Wilkins in the focus.

On one hand, the quarterback is coming out of his rookie contract, and on the other, their immediate concern is to re-sign defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to their roster. Josh Moser spoke to Tyreek Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus about the Miami Dolphins’ priorities in this off-season. The agent presented both sides of the coin but laid importance on signing the DT.

The Main Sports Anchor at WSVN-TV asked Rosenhaus about whom the Dolphins should prioritize more in the off-season trades. Rosenhaus tried to make a case for Christian Wilkins because his contract with the Dolphins has come to an end, while the QBs contract is still in motion. One can agree that time is running out and the Dolphins have till March 5 to franchise tag Wilkins.

For now, they have two options, either to franchise tag him or give him a long-term deal. However, it’s equally important to add both Tua and Wilkins to the roster because both athletes have been instrumental in the team’s success. But lucky for the Dolphins, giving Wilkins a franchise tag would mean that they can keep him for another year and devise a much better strategy based on his performance this year.

However, speaking about Wilkins and his performance, he excels at his position. A comparison between the Super Bowl-winning DT Chris Jones and Christian Wilkins would only be fair to get an idea of where we can see the Dolphins DT in the upcoming years.

Should Christian Wilkins get a long-term deal?

Statistically speaking, yes. This season, Wilkins had 38 solo tackles, 9 sacks, and a force fumble as his stats. Compared to Chris Jones, who has 20 solo tackles and 10.5 sacks this year, Wilkins would appear superior in the eyes of many. Wilkins started his NFL career in 2019 and is nearing the end of his 4-year $15.4 million rookie contract. To put it in perspective, Chris Jones makes $19.5 million in a year.

But that’s nothing compared to his 2020-23 4-year $80 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Wilkins, who had a base salary of $10.7 million in 2023 is only due for a hike. However, the Dolphins seem to be cornered with their cap space. To remedy the problem, the Dolphins will be releasing the veterans Emmanuel Ogbah and Xavien Howard from their roster. Hopefully, that will give them enough room to re-sign Christian Wilkins.
