Tua's big payday—Will Tyreek Hill keep up or is age catching up with him?

Tyreek Hill is among the NFL’s Top 30 players who are over 30 years of age and are entering the 2024 season. His impact on the NFL has been nothing short of extraordinary. After all, he’s the only player in league history to rack up over 1,700 receiving yards in multiple seasons. Since joining the Dolphins, Hill has achieved this feat each year, “with 1,710 yards in 2022 and an impressive 1,799 yards in 2023, despite missing a game due to an ankle injury.” But now it seems, he is feeling his age!

After sharing his celebratory mood for Tua Tagovailoa on his recent contract signing, about four hours later on Friday, Tyreek Hill shared another post expressing what he felt today after the practice. On X, he wrote, “Today at practice I felt 30” with a laughing emoji. After this remark, his fans speculated about what the Cheetah could mean.

Hill is essentially 30 years old and entering the latter stages of his career. So, it’s likely that he was feeling tired while working out excessively. However, that doesn’t mean the big 30 is impacting his game, at least his last year’s stats say so. With him being 30, Hill still posses the speed and agility, which makes him a unique challenge for any defense. His ability to sprint downfield for deep passes or evade defenders on shorter routes sets him apart from others. And it’s arguably true that the Miami offense clearly struggles without him.

For example, Tua Tagovailoa’s pressure rate (15.7 in 2023) and sack rate (101.1 average in 2023) were significantly higher when Hill was off the field compared to when he played, according to Next Gen Stats. So, there’s a high chance that Hill light-heartedly commented about his age. After all, the WR is known for his sense of humor and fun nature. Nonetheless, the Phins camp is rejoicing right now! With Tua Tagovailoa’s recent deal, even Hill joined in on the celebrations.

The Miami Dolphins have reportedly agreed on a four-year, $212.4 million deal with the quarterback, after his “hold in” approach. This extension brought a wave of happiness inside the building. Tagovailoa’s friend and teammate, Tyreek Hill, shared a post on his official X account, reacting to the news with one emoji – a grin emoji, indicating joy and positive feelings for the quarterback.

A couple of days earlier, Hill expressed his faith in getting the quarterback’s deal done, emphasizing that he is an important part of the team. This came after Tagovailoa decided to hold in at the camp. The team started their training camp on July 24, 2024, and coach Mike McDaniel said on Wednesday that the quarterback’s practice participation will be “fluid.”

He did limited practice on Day 1. On Day 2, he was present for practice but did not participate in the team’s second workout of the summer, awaiting his contract negotiation with the franchise.  This $212.4 million is the 10th-largest in NFL history. He now will be getting a guaranteed amount worth $167 million. Even his $53.1 million average annual value puts him in third place, after Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence’s deal, both amassing $55 million average annual salary.

Tua Tagovailoa’s contract with the Dolphins is finally signed, but now Tyreek Hill is seeking a new deal. Hill initially agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract when he joined the Dolphins from the Kansas City Chiefs. With stars like Justin Jefferson now earning $35 million annually, Hill wants his pay to reflect his elite status.

The Cheetah, who has an option to leave his contract after 2024, is clear about one thing: he wants to stay in Miami. When asked about the same by reporters in the camp, Hill made a special request to his agent.

He told his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to ensure that he doesn’t get traded again, recalling the previous move from Kansas City. Hill said, “I want to be in Miami. That’s been my only thing to him. I want to stay here in Miami, man. Obviously, this is where family is now. Everybody loves it here—family loves it, wife loves it, kids love it. So, obviously I love it. I love playing for coach and my teammates are awesome. So, I wouldn’t want to leave, man.”

Hill’s current base salary of $19.7 million for the upcoming season is on the lower end of the market for top wide receivers. Given his MVP-level performance last season, with 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns, Hill is arguably well-positioned for a significant raise.
