Should the Dolphins really consider a Derek Carr-like escape hatch for Tua Tagovailoa?

The Green Bay Packers’ 2024 preseason training camp kicked off on Monday. However, Jordan Love did not participate in the team activities. Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst recently confirmed that Love will continue skipping practice until he gets a contract extension worth USD 50 million per year. According to the latest updates, the Packers and QB Jordan Love are very close to getting a new, hefty contract, which has the potential to launch him as the highest-paid player in NFL history.

However, Jordan Love’s holdout approach is leaving NFL executives and commentators buzzing. Interestingly, similar sentiments are emerging for Miami and its QB Tua Tagovailoa regarding his contract extension.

During The Rich Eisen Show, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and Rich Eisen talked candidly about what is holding up Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love’s contract extension and why the Miami Dolphins are dragging their feet on extending Tua Tagovailoa.

The NFL broadcaster suggested that Tua should adopt a similar approach to the Packers QB. During the live show, Rich Eisen asked, “What’s your best guess as to who gets a higher annual payment? Is it Tua or Jordan Love?” To which Florio promptly answered, “I think it’s Jordan Love.”

Apart from that, he also gave his suggestion to Tua, remarking, “I think Tua, and we haven’t heard anything along these lines, and it really wouldn’t go with Tua’s overall personality and vibe. He might have to hold out to get what he wants because I can see the Dolphins making a last-best offer before the start of training camp, and it’s going to be a lot better than the $23.1 million he’s going to make this year.”

Mike also highlighted Tua’s expectations with Miami. “But him saying it’s still not enough, it’s still not what I want, yeah, it’s smarter for me to take that than to play out the fifth year of my rookie contract. I want what I want, and the only way I’m going to get it is to stay away altogether,” he further stated.

Florio also shed light on the current situation, as Jordan Love’s didn’t do the same, demonstrating his belief that “maybe Tua will hold in, but I think at the end of the day, Love ends up with more, because I just don’t see the Dolphins making a market-level investment in Tua.”

Tagovailoa attended OTAs but did not participate in any team drills as he pushed for a new contract. If the QB skips the training camp, he may choose to follow Love’s lead and take part in the team meetings. The Dolphins have scheduled its inaugural training camp this coming Wednesday.

Thus, after witnessing the latest situation with Tagovailoa’s contract, Mike also clarified that he doesn’t see the Dolphins going there with him, as there are a lot of question marks with the current market situation. He also spoke about the escape hatch for the team.

Will the Dolphins provide an escape hatch and adopt Derek Carr’s approach?

Mike Florio also exclaimed that teams would provide an escape hatch for Tua and Jordan Love. “We saw it with Derek Carr’s contract with the Raiders two years ago. Everybody made a big deal about $40 million a year, this, that, or the other thing. I think we were able to get out of it for one year. So that’s going to be one of the key details for Tua, for Jordan Love, for any of these contracts,” he remarked.

Several questions are looming around regarding the escape hatch for the Packers. The key questions include the number of years they will have the guaranteed money that will keep the two sides intact, and what exactly are the cap consequences. If we compare the contracts in the Deshaun Watson deal, the Browns and Watson will stay put for five seasons.

However, the Derek Carr extension which was initiated two years ago in Las Vegas is quite hefty, as it is worth more than $40 million per year for a period of three years. Ultimately he was traded to The Saints in 2023 when he waived no trading clause. Besides, there is one year left on his previous contract. Now, as the questions are yet to be answered, the outcomes for Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa are nonetheless going to accelerate the NFL QB market.
