While the week 2 loss against the Bills was embarrassing for the Dolphins, it has jeopardized their chances for the next few weeks. One of the most important players, Tua Tagovailoa, got injured. And again, it’s a concussion injury. Let’s explore what happened there.

While trying to secure 1st and goal, he took a knee to the head. Immediately, he was taken off the field. It is his 3rd concussion injury in 3 years. He first suffered a grade 1 concussion in a week 4 game against the Bengals in September 2022. A few months later, in December 2022, he again suffered a grade 3 concussion. Is this one more critical than the previous ones?

While we still wait for a confirmed status on the extent of the injury, the Dolfans are worried. When he got injured in week 4 in 2022, NFLPA changed the concussion rules. A week before that, Tua Tagovailoa suffered a back injury against the Bills but returned to the field. NFLPA investigated the injury following which they terminated the contract of an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant.

However, the team suffered a bigger setback after the week 16 concussion against the Packers in 2022. While he was ruled out of the next few games, the Dolphins lost the wild-card playoff to Bills. This year, they wouldn’t want him to miss too many games.

Skylar Thompson, the backup for Tua Tagovailoa

In their active roster, the Dolphins only have Skylar Thompson as the alternate quarterback. With the team for last 2 seasons, the 7th round draft pick has improved leaps and bounds. HC Mike McDaniel also praised him during the off-season, saying, “I see a better quarterback now than I did at the beginning of camp, than last year and the year before . I see teammates believe in him.” In absence of Tua Tagovailoa, the Phoins have one more option.

A week before the 2024 season, on August 29, 2024, the team signed Tim Boyle to their practice squad. While he has been in camps of different teams in NFL for 6 seasons, he has only played only 20 games. Out of those, he has lost all 5 games in which he started. Both options don’t inspire much confidence, however, they will have to manage with what they have.
