Is Trevor Lawrence really 'hot garbage,' or is DeSean Jackson just being overly harsh?

Trevor Lawrence, once seen as the savior for the Jacksonville Jaguars, is off to a brutal start this season. The Jags are sitting at a miserable 0-3, and Lawrence is being called out for his poor play. The QB has struggled through and through this season. Throwing for just 560 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while failing to complete over 60% of his passes in any game.

Former NFL star DeSean Jackson voiced his disappointment on the Jaguars QB. On the latest episode of Shady & DJacc, he mentioned, “HOT GARBAGE. I mean Trevor Lawrence like you go out and pay that man all that money.” Both Jackson and his co-host Lean Shady McCoy questioned whether the young QB has what it takes to turn the team around.

It’s not just Jackson who’s raising concerns—analysts are buzzing about Lawrence’s massive contract and what it means for the Jaguars. After signing a five-year, $275 million extension, with $200 million guaranteed, Lawrence is under immense pressure to deliver. “You pay a guy $55 million a year dog. What you say, everybody’s position is basically up for a decision,” pointed out the Ex-Eagles. To make matters worse, only $1.5 million of Lawrence’s 2024 salary is guaranteed, which means the big bucks come later—piling on the pressure for him to perform in no time.

Other experts are critical of the Jags’ quarterback, with Chase Daniel saying, “He’s not playing with confidence” and pointing to his turnover rate as a major issue. James Jones was even harsher, stating, “Trevor Lawrence is an average quarterback in this league — at best,” while Emmanuel Acho compared him unfavorably to Josh Allen, remarking, “People tried to tell the world that Trevor Lawrence was a Rolls Royce… but he ain’t got the Rolls Royce rims, tires, wheel, interior or value.” Trevor is fully aware of his struggles and isn’t shying away from the criticism. He knows he hasn’t lived up to the hype, acknowledging, “We suck right now,” after a tough loss. Despite this, his confidence remains intact. “I don’t really care what people think about me,” Lawrence says, focusing on earning respect through his play.

Fans and experts alike are questioning whether Jacksonville jumped the gun by committing to such a massive deal, especially given Lawrence’s shaky start this season. “Shad Khan might be regretting this contract soon,” some are saying, as Lawrence’s job security could be in jeopardy if things don’t improve fast. With big guaranteed payouts looming in 2025 and beyond, Lawrence’s future in Jacksonville is suddenly looking a lot less secure.

Trevor Lawrence and Doug Pederson face mounting pressure

Have an interesting take?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a brutal start in the 2024 season, dropping their first three games and looking lost on both sides of the ball. After a tough Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns, where they couldn’t close out despite dominating the first half, the Jags followed that up with an even uglier 47-10 blowout by the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. Against Dolphins, Jacksonville blew a lead in the second half, failing to score and letting the Dolphins secure a last-second 20-17 victory. In Buffalo, it was a disaster from start to finish, with Trevor Lawrence throwing for just 178 yards and an ugly interception.

The 24-year-old, once considered the face of the Jaguars’ future, is now facing heavy scrutiny. Lawrence replied to the hardships, saying, “Nobody’s coming to save us. The quarterback has to play well every week… I don’t feel like I’ve done that consistently enough.”  Head coach Doug Pederson is likely to know it. “There has to be changes… play design, personnel, everything,” Pederson said after the Buffalo loss, acknowledging that no one on the team is safe from evaluation.

The problems extend beyond Lawrence, though. His receiving corps has been inconsistent, dropping passes, and the offensive line, led by Cam Robinson, allowed eight pressures in just one game. Jacksonville’s management, including owner Shad Khan, may be starting to feel the heat. Winning was the expectation, but with the team is awfully behind, changes could be looming. Pederson’s job security isn’t guaranteed, and if the losing streak continues, the fear of firings could spread across the coaching staff. The pressure is mounting in Jaguars, and if things don’t turn around soon, heads might roll.
