With the NFL regular season ending this past Sunday, there is great excitement to see how the teams build up for the 2025 season. Especially, the teams that could not make it to the playoffs, as they will surely be looking for some changes. The Jaguars for one, did not have a great season as they ended up with a 4-13 record and fired their HC Doug Pederson as soon as the season ended. While many expected this, some people felt sad seeing Pederson leave the team.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was one such individual. Lawrence worked with Pederson for the past 3 seasons and his breakout season was the one where Pederson took over as HC.
It makes sense then that Trevor Lawrence will miss working with the 56-year-old. As the QB opined, “Going into the season, no one would’ve thought Coach Pederson would’ve been fired at the end of the year. You gotta continue to get better and for whatever reason we did not… my rookie year was really tough. A lot of turmoil and chaos. For him to come in and provide stability and revive our team and be that consistent voice and piece for us … I don’t want that to be overshadowed by a disappointing finish.”

With the announcement that Khan was going to stay with the Jaguars, it was almost certain that Pederson was going to be removed as HC. The pair never looked to agree on anything, as almost always they stated different reasons for the Jaguars’ poor performances. One has to agree with Trevor Lawrence though, as Pederson brought with him experience and calmness to the team, which was the need of the hour when he joined. Well, now that the Jaguars have moved on from Pederson, who will they look towards? It seems like Khan already has a target in mind.
The Jaguars now have become the 3rd team to put in an interview request for the Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Well, who wouldn’t want him? Spagnuolo comes in with a ton of experience having coached 7 teams across 26 years in the NFL. Last year he even became the first coordinator to win 4 Super Bowls, well that is some achievement.

Is Spagnuolo the only option for Shad Khan’s Jaguars?
Spagnuolo is undoubtedly a great option for the Jaguars. He, though, is not the only one. The Jaguars need someone who can bring stability to the team and one person that can definitely do that is Bill Belichick. The former Patriots HC is as good as it gets and is eager to get back into coaching (even though he’s with UNC now) and Khan is one owner who will not hesitate to reach out to Belichick. Well, Belichick coaching the Jaguars, who would have thought that 2 years ago?
Apart from Belichick, a few other names are very hot right now. Ben Johnson, especially, is someone that every team is looking at and the OC will certainly be a big boost to any team he joins. His offensive prowess was on full display when the Lions took on the Jaguars in the regular season as his team racked up 52 points via seven consecutive scoring drives. That would have caught Khan’s attention for sure.

The Jaguars do have Mike Vrabel, Joe Brady, and a few others as viable options for HC, but it does feel like Khan will go for either Johnson or Belichick if the Spagnuolo route doesn’t work. Whoever they get, it is clear that the Jags need to make some changes if they want to succeed next season. Khan’s team has been able to reach the playoffs just once in the past 7 seasons and that is something to worry about. Will hiring Spagnuolo help change this? Well, we will just have to wait and see.
