The Dallas Cowboys haven’t had the best start to their season. Though they stand at 3-3, competition’s tough, and they’re only third-best in NFC East. Things were looking good for a little while after they beat the Steelers. “They counted us out, guess they can’t count,” was the sassy taunt of CeeDee Lamb post-match. Of course, Cowboys fans aren’t allowed to have too much of a good thing. Their game against the Detroit Lions last Sunday saw them humiliated, losing 42-9. This is in a game where Dak Prescott threw 2 interceptions and no touchdowns, so you can imagine how it went.

You can’t just pin it all on the players, or even on the coach. Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones has courted controversy with the media from the start. After that disastrous game against the Lions, Jones pretty much immediately snapped at Dallas radio hosts Shan Shariff and R.J. Choppy when asked about him not doing much for the team during the offseason. “You really think you’re gonna sit here with a microphone and tell me all of the things that I’ve done wrong without going over the rights?” he said, in the middle of a long rant. This rankled a lot of people, including Kayla Nicole, Travis Kelce’s ex. In a post on her Instagram story with the radio interview in the background, the caption said “Can someone let Pappa Jerry know he’s worried about firing the wrong people?”

Nicole had earlier commented on the defeat on X, predicting someone would be getting fired. It’s likely the story caption was an extension of this take. And honestly, Jones has been unpredictable on and off going back as long as he’s been in the public eye. His most recent controversy revolved around his refusal to renew his two biggest stars’ contracts.

Quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are the meat and potatoes of the Dallas Cowboys offense. They’re stars, and you’d expect them to be treated like stars, but Jones couldn’t help but drag his feet when it came to contract negotiation. It got to the point that CeeDee Lamb had to hold out in the runup to the season before Jones finally gave in and gave them contracts.

Jerry Jones has always been volatile with the press

As seen today, Jerry Jones can be quick to react harshly to criticism. He even went as far as calling his Cowboys purchase “the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.” Pretty extreme for someone whose team has won the Super Bowl 3 times, though it was a long time ago.

But he’s been known for going the other way too, boasting to the point the boasts aren’t in the realm of truth anymore. Like after the Lamb and Prescott contracts went through. He was quick to boast, claiming that his was the highest-spending team in the entire league when it absolutely wasn’t. At the time, the Cowboys were the 13th highest spenders in the league, a far cry from the top.

You know the funny part? That was a complete u-turn on where he stood just a couple of months prior, hand-wringing over the purse strings. He’s inconsistent, and he’ll never keep a story straight. He’s not going to have the radio jockeys fired, he’ll forget about them by tomorrow.
