Kayla Nicole's tribute to Naomi Osaka—Is mental health finally getting the attention it deserves in sports?

Travis Kelce’s ex-girlfriend Kayla Nicole isn’t the one to hold back, not when it comes to self-reflection, women empowerment, and mental health. These barriers were broken today by Naomi Osaka, who marked an epic comeback after one year of hiatus after her maternity leave.

She came back to play the US Open yet again and found herself going head-to-head against Jelena Ostapenko. The back and forth ended up in a 6-3 6-2 victory and Osaka got a bit emotional in the post-game interview. Kayla Nicole found this moment heart-touching and shared Osaka’s experience on her IG Story.

Nicole took to Instagram and shared the clip of her interview with a few emotional words saying, “She [Naomi Osaka] means so much to the world of tennis. So much to women in sports. So much to mental health advocates. So much to motherhood. Just love her.” She also tagged Naomi Osaka in the IG Story.

Naomi was emotional and couldn’t hold back the tears of happiness. As she celebrated, the tennis professional mentioned how she watched Coco Gauff play last year. Watching the US Open Singles Champion play on the court inspired her to come back and mentioned how she had doubts about her “athleticism” post giving birth to her daughter, Shai.

“Last year, I was watching Coco play and I so badly wanted to step on these courts again and I didn’t know if I could,” said Osaka. “Just to win this match and to be in this atmosphere means so much.” But that’s not the only reason Osaka was emotional after winning the US Open match. The game happened in Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York, a place that the tennis player calls home.

The difficulties of pregnancy led her to believe that she couldn’t be her old athletic self again, but as it happened, Osaka came out triumphant. These challenges and curve balls definitely take a toll on mental health and that’s something Kayla Nicole is very familiar with. Things have been uneasy for her since she split up with Travis Kelce.

When you hear Monday blues, you won’t wish they would be as brutal as Nicole’s. One of those Mondays, her dogs defec-ted in the house and there was blood in the stool. She had a breakdown after watching the condition of her home, and obviously, because the dogs weren’t exactly in perfect health.

“I woke up to not one, not two, not three, five piles of s— in my house, liquid diarrhea blood in the stool. You know what’s that good for a $1000 bad bill? It’s like, do I have kids, or do I not have kids? Am I a single mother?” said Kayla Nicole on her IG Story about a week ago. The dogs also remind her of her past life with Travis Kelce as the couple used to raise the pets together, but Kelce gave custody of those dogs to her after they split up.

“I am not on the edge of a mental breakdown. No, I don’t care. They defec-ted on my brand-new rug. I am fine, absolutely fine,” said Nicole later. Some time back, she also found herself at a crossroads with the Swifties who grilled her for not being able to “fully digest all these new albums,” later mentioning that haters do tend to impact one’s mental health and she is focusing less on negativity.

Apart from these incidents, she has also been vocal about self-care. Time and again, the social media influencer has mentioned ways in which an individual can find peace like exercise, food, and prioritizing oneself. Overall, there is no doubt that Nicole’s story is one of resilience and growth. What do you think of Kayla Nicole’s experience? Let us know below.
