Travis Kelce praises Mahomes' cojones—Is this the best QB-TE duo we've ever seen?

In the latest episode of the New Heights podcast,͏ Travis Kelce and͏ his brother Jason Kelc͏e dived into one of the most͏ jaw-͏dropping moments of the NFL preseason.͏ The discussion took place during the͏ Season 3 premiere ͏of the ͏podcast, released this week.

The star tight end lauded Patrick Mahomes for his in-game mindset behind-the-back pass. Kelce, still buzzing from the remarkable play, expressed, “The cojones to throw something like that in traffic is insane.” He acknowledged that the pass wasn’t just a flashy move for the highlight reel but a calculated decision made in the heat of the moment. “Pat’s not doing this just to look cool. He’s doing it because he knows it’s the best option in that split second,” Kelce added, emphasizing Mahomes’ game-changing instincts.

The brothers also reflected on the hilarious aftermath of the play. Mahomes jokingly threw Kelce under the bus, implying that the tight end had messed up his route, forcing the quarterback to improvise. Travis admitted, “I screwed this one up. I didn’t even look at Coach Reid after the play,” showing that even top players need a bit of luck—and a quarterback like Mahomes—to pull through.

The behind-the-back pass quickly went viral, turning heads as more than just a flashy move. It highlighted the deep chemistry between Mahomes and Kelce, a bond forged through years of playing together. As the 34-year-old put it, “When I turned around, Pat was already in mid-behind-the-back pass, and it was like slow motion.” That play wasn’t just a fluke but a result of Mahomes’ ability to execute under pressure.

Mahomes’ dazzling play not only thrilled fans but also highlighted the Chiefs’ thrilling potential. With every game, Mahomes continues to showcase why he remains one of the NFL’s most thrilling players, setting the stage for even more captivating performances.

Magic Mahomes wows fans in preseason showdown

On a sunlit Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium, the K͏ansas City ͏Chiefs took on the Det͏roit ͏Lions in a thrilling͏ preseason clash. With just over six minutes left in t͏he first quarter, the Ch͏iefs’͏ magician quarterback found himself in͏ a ͏tricky situation. On a third-and-3 in Lions territory, Mahomes faked a handoff and,͏ with an air of calm that͏ belied the audacity of the move, delivered ͏a behind-the͏-͏back ͏pass to his favorite target, Tra͏vis͏ Kelce. The play, sparked ͏by Mahomes’ frustration with K͏elce’͏s ͏route, was a brilliant mix of improvisation͏ and ingenuity.

“I didn’t do it to look cool,” Mahomes admitted with a grin, explaining that the pass was a spur-of-the-moment decision after Kelce’s misstep. “I was pissed off at Travis…so out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass.” The Chiefs’ QB toyed with several things in practice but never implemented those in any game. This throw was one of those which went viral almost immediately. Even Jason Kelce, Travis’ older brother, couldn’t resist commenting, in a tweet “This son of a gun actually did it!! Magic Mahomes.”

Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid, known for his trust in Mahomes’ creativity, took it in stride. “I heard he blamed it on Kelce, but that’s all right,” Reid chuckled. “(Mahomes) does it in practice…as long as it’s a completion, I’m all right with it.”

Despite the jaw-dropping play, the Chiefs fell just short, losing 24-23 to the Lions. But Mahomes, as always, left the NFL world with another unforgettable highlight. “It probably looked pretty cool,” Mahomes reflected afterward, “but I haven’t actually got to see it yet.”
