Haters are blaming Taylor Swift. But some analysts, like Pat McAfee, know that there is another story to Travis Kelce’s underwhelming performance this season. The former NFL punter highlighted this topic on his show, clearing the main reason for Kelce’s low catches and touchdowns.
The Kansas City Chiefs have played 14 games this season. Surprisingly, Kelce has just five touchdowns in his 13 games (as he missed the Week 1 battle). Despite making his name in the franchise’s history for receiving yards, Kelce’s game has been downgraded as his stats aren’t as impressive as they were in the past. So, what’s the reason for it? Pat McAfee highlighted the reason, along with Kelce’s stats.

In the latest episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday, Pat McAfee and his co-hosts discussed Travis Kelce’s below-par performance this season. McAfee shared a tweet from a football enthusiast, where the fan asked, “Travis Kelce has put up good, but not great, numbers this year. What have defenses been doing differently this year to cover him?” McAfee appreciated the question and said, “Everybody’s saying like: Hey, you know Travis Kelce is not as productive, and they’re taking him away.“
Before moving to the exact reason behind his unsatisfactory performance, McAfee’s co-host Darius Butler highlighted: “Right now Travis Kelce sits 85 catches 924 yards with only five touchdowns, and last year 110 catches 1,400 with 12 TDs.” He added that Kelce consistently had impressive performances last year, with over 80 yards in nine games and only one with less than 30 yards. However, he has already had three games with less than 30 yards this year. Additionally, he scored three touchdowns in the first four games, but in the last nine games, he only scored two. So, if you used to bet on him scoring a touchdown, it’s not as reliable this season.

Revealing his poor performance, McAfee and the team shared a clip of the Chiefs vs. Patriots game where man-to-man coverage is seen with Kelce, preventing him from catching a pass or even running for yards.
McAfee stated that as Kelce is surrounded by three to eight players in every game, it becomes difficult for Patrick Mahomes to pass to Kelce, eventually leading to his lower-yard coverage and fewer touchdowns this season.
Although Kelce has achieved fewer touchdowns and yards this season, in total, he has made history in receiving yards and touchdowns.

Travis Kelce achieved a significant milestone in the Week 12 game against the Las Vegas Raiders when he reached 11,000 career receiving yards. This milestone made him the fourth and the fastest tight end to do so in his 154th game.
He accomplished this feat with a 27-yard catch in the second quarter, upsetting the Raiders 31-17. The previous record was held by Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, who did it in 191 games. Additionally, the tight end is seven touchdowns away (currently 77) from surpassing Priest Holmes, who is at 83, for the franchise record.
