Does not wearing team gear make you any less of a die-hard fan like Kelce?

Last April, a couple of months before he met Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce walked onto Progressive Field, sporting a Cleveland jersey, ready to throw a ceremonial first pitch before the Guardians took on the Mariners. But right before his comically wild pitch, he unbuttoned his jersey to reveal a t-shirt that read, “I’m from Cleveland.” You can get more superfan-coded than that, can you? But 18 months on, has he switched loyalties in favor of the Yankees?

Well, not quite. But it sure looked like he enjoyed watching his girlfriend (seemingly) support the New York franchise. That was on Monday at Yankee Stadium as the home side took on the Guardians in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

En route to the Yankees’ 5-2 victory, there was a point where Taylor Swift seemed to be celebrating a run by New York, and Travis Kelce turned toward her, likely saying something like, “Wrong team, Tay!” But who could’ve blamed the pop star? She’s been a New York girl for over a decade, so it made sense that she was rooting for the Yankees. As for the Chiefs tight end, though, he didn’t really seem too upset about his team’s loss. And that made many suggest he wasn’t a Cleveland fan anymore.

But after Game 3 in the series, Travis Kelce cleared any misconceptions about his sporting loyalties with a couple of tweets. On Thursday night, the Guardians hosted the Yankees at Progressive Field after going 2-0 down in the series. It was a game they needed to win to stay within reach of the New York side, and that’s precisely what they did. After they won 7-5, no one seemed more pumped than the Chiefs star. Kelce tweeted, “Playoff baseball baby!!! Guardians have the city ROCKIN TONIGHT!! What a game!🔥🔥🔥

In a subsequent tweet, he hit back at everyone who doubted the Ohio native’s devotion to his home teams. “I’ve been a Cleveland sports fan my entire life… Make it back to countless amount of games over the years, both Guards and [Cavaliers], just to enjoy these memories with my friends and family, WIN OR LOSE!!…” He was probably referring to his trip to Yankee Stadium on Monday, where his closest friends surrounded him and Swift.

Moreover, addressing the fact that he wasn’t in a Cleveland jersey (and was sporting a ‘Midnight Rodeo’ cap), the 35-year-old added, “I don’t wear Cleveland gear one time 😂 and all of a sudden I’m not a real fan?! Ask anybody that was in or around that suite on Game 1 who I was cheering for. They’ll let you know I was there for the Guardians.

Travis Kelce is indeed an avid supporter of the Guardians, and he has his roots to thank for that! For those unaware, Kelce is actually a Westlake, Ohio native. And if his “I’m from Cleveland” t-shirt from last year’s season opener is anything to go by, his heart definitely bleeds for the team. Even so, many followers couldn’t help but point out the tight end’s seeming duality.

As has become extremely common on social media nowadays, some users dug up a 14-year-old tweet by Kelce, who wrote, “And my Yankees lost…. smh hats off to the Rangers though, but I’m hurtin’ tonight!!!” This post was from 2010 after the Rangers defeated the Yankees 4-2 in the ALCS. While many criticized Kelce for this, it’s possible he may have been supporting the New York franchise because Cleveland didn’t make it to the playoffs that season. After all, he was back to repping the Guardians as soon as the 2011 season kicked off.

Coming back to the Yankees-Guardians series and his trip to Game 1 on Monday…

Travis Kelce revealed he had “mixed feelings” about the outing

On an episode of New Heights after his trip to Yankee Stadium, Travis Kelce opened up about his experience. Further proving his allegiance to Cleveland, he told his brother, Jason, “I’m in hostile territory ’cause it’s the Bronx Bombers, and I’m at Yankee Stadium and the playoffs, and I’m over here cheering for the Guards cause I’m a Cleveland kid.”

Admitting that he wants the Guardians to win a World Series (which would be their first since 1948), the tight end couldn’t help but feel sad after the ALCS Game 1 loss to the Yankees. “It was mixed feelings because I was there trying to have some fun with Tay and everybody. All our friends came; we had an unbelievable crew with us… Even though the Guards couldn’t pull it off, it was still an exciting game.”

Having never experienced Yankee Stadium in all its glory, especially during a playoff game, it was a new feeling for Travis Kelce. And it didn’t disappoint, man. The Yankees, the fans, the players, everybody involved, man. It was awesome,” he told his brother. As for Taylor Swift, she’s no stranger to a jam-packed Yankee Stadium. The last time she was there was in 2022, when NYU awarded her an honorary doctorate in fine arts.

With the Chiefs back in business this weekend – going up against the 49ers – and Taylor Swift kicking off the last leg of the Eras Tour, it looks like the power couple made the most of their time together before returning to their busy schedules.
