Are the Chiefs plotting a masterstroke by eyeing Josh Uche to fortify their defense?

With the NFL trade deadline looming, is there a possible twist in the Chiefs’ attempt to get Patriots LB Josh Uche into their roster? Well, it could be possible as Uche misses the Jets clash despite not having an injury. Although the Chiefs have started their season strong, winning six out of six clashes, they could add some further reinforcements to their defensive line.

And the fact that his contract is only worth $3M, the Chiefs could make a move before the NFL trade window slams shut in the next few weeks. Apart from his overall value, he only has a meager $1.3 M in base salary that the Chiefs could exploit as they look to further solidify their hold in the AFC West. Even though this could sound like a regular trade rumor, ESPN’s analytics writer Seth Walder also shared the same views.

“Kansas City could use Uche to sub in for Mike Danna in passing situations and ought to get a lot more disruption as a result,” wrote Walder. Well, he didn’t just share his views out of thin air as he pointed out the difference, “Danna has a 4.4 % pass rush win rate at edge, while Uche is off to a scorching start with a 24.1% pass rush win rate.” And while offering his insight on why Uche could be a great fit for the Kansas City defensive line, he even went back to 2022. “Uche had an 18.5% pressure rate, the highest for any player in an entire season in ESPN’s dataset.”

Among all the statistics he conveyed to support his case, Walder also mentioned, “Uche is also cheap, which helps a lot in this case because Kansas City is tight against the salary cap.” But Walder wasn’t the only one who spoke about the rumors of Uche making the switch from New England to Kansas City, as the Patriots LB himself gave his thoughts about the trade rumors flying around in Foxborough.

Josh Uche addresses the trade rumors amid Chiefs’ interest

Although there’s no concrete news regarding Josh Uche agreeing on a trade deal before Nov 5th, he did open up about the trade rumors that are flying around his future in New England. He said, “Ultimately, I am an employee of the Patriots and if they think it’s in their best interest to trade. I know they’ll do so. If there is an opportunity for them to build for the future, I know they’re going to do.” Well, considering he would be an unrestricted free agent after this season, the Patriots could find a solution to cash in.

Have an interesting take?

However, it isn’t the first that Uche has found himself in this position. Going back to 2023, when the 26-year-old became a free agent, the Patriots decided to re-sign him for a sum of $3M. When asked to express his thoughts about the contract, Uche conveyed, “I have no regrets. Taking the one-year deal, a team-friendly deal with different offers on the table.” For the seven games he has played this season, Uche has only racked up 13 tackles and just two sacks. Well, him playing just 35% of the defensive snaps with one start hasn’t helped either.

With the Patriots struggling to get off the foot of their division and the Chiefs rocking at the top in theirs, Josh Uche would surely be excited to make this trade happen and join Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. But the question is, will the two franchises come to an agreement before the trade window slams shut on Nov 5th? Guess we will find out soon, as the rumors are only going to get stronger in the coming weeks.
