A new chapter for Tom Brady this season at the Fox broadcast booth but joining him was an old buddy who has not just shared three Lombardi Trophies but a relationship that was borne out of tough luck — making him stay after every practice for at least 20 minutes to catch more passes in his rookie year and a lot of swearing. That’s former TE Rob Gronkowski for you, and then, there’s retired WR Julian Edelman, who spent his first offseason in L.A. just to stay close to Brady. Now, what happens when two of these Pats, or shall we say wingmen, get together?
They talk about sports. Redundant much? Well, not this time. In the Dudes on Dudes podcast episode aired on Friday, Edelman was given a hypothetical: “Who would be our QB?” Patrick Mahomes? Not quite. The question is set in the pretext of what would happen if veteran TE Travis Kelce were brought to join Bay State. Edelman had three options: Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, or both for two halves in the game.
“We gotta go Brady. Because [we] don’t know how to play that scramble drill, second play within a play. That was not our forte [laughing].” Edelman joined in agreement in the background. And here’s why.

“Those guys learned that. That scrambled drill: Travis is always open where there’s that second play within the play that Patrick Mahomes creates and they’ve got on such a wavelength where he’s always in the open position. He knows where to go and he reads and scans the field better than anyone… and Mahomes always delivers. It’d be different. It’d be very different.” That’s when Gronk chimed in too.
“Yeah, that second phase of a play — [Travis Kelce] got that down to a science on how to get open, I mean. That’s due to Patrick Mahomes being able to scramble like that but Travis is also one of the most clutch players in the history of NFL. There’s no doubt about it. When it comes to playoff performances or tough games, he has all the numbers.”
In the same interview, Julian and Rob discussed the Chiefs acquiring WR DeAndre Hopkins after sending a conditional fifth-round draft pick to the Titans. Rob emphasized that Reid “knows how to utilize players in every which way, in every aspect of the game. And that’s what he’s going to do with DeAndre Hopkins.” Looks like Rob couldn’t be more right as the veteran head coach had already ruled D-Hop’s presence in Sunday’s game in Las Vegas with a “probably.” This comes right after the WR completed his second workout with the Chiefs.

In an interview with SI, Gronk was picked on by Brice Butler at Super Bowl Radio Row in Las Vegas from last season. He commented on the most perennial question of the decade: Do you think could catch Brady potentially? It wasn’t going to be a simple answer, of course. Gronk had a lot of clarity of mind when he decided to answer: Is Patrick Mahomes the only quarterback that has the potential to catch Brady?
Gronk answered, “There’s going to be so many variables and factors that play into it over the next 15 years. Does he want to play … until he’s 45? You don’t know that.” What are the factors that can contribute to achieving this feat, detailing this he added, “That’s only up to him. And there are so many other things that have to go right. How long is Andy Reid going to be the head coach for as well? That’s a big variable right there. How long is Travis Kelce going to play with him as his No. 1 weapon throughout his whole tenure as a quarterback?”

Only time will tell if that happens, Gronk too mirrored this sentiment. He also finds it difficult to achieve, because what Tom Brady did was just spectacular. Now, it has been eight months since that interview. And his stance on this hasn’t wavered a tad. Yes, he acknowledges the fact that Patrick Mahomes is “possibly, possibly better than the GOAT [Tom Brady] in the end… is that he can extend plays to a whole another degree. But he’s never going to be better than Tom. Even if he is. I’ll never say that because I love Tom.” So, there’s that.
