Can Baker Mayfield handle the pressure, or is he just not cut out for the NFL?

Brady has returned to Raymond James Stadium, but this time, his role will be to call out plays from above instead of the gridiron. Having made his broadcasting debut for Fox Sports in week 1, Brady was scheduled to call the Bucs vs. Eagles this week. Although he is still learning the ropes of his new endeavor, Brady didn’t forget to reply to the comments Baker Mayfield made building up to this clash.

Calling out from his broadcaster booth, Brady said, “I thought stressful was not having Super Bowl rings. There was the mindset of a champion that I took to work every day. This wasn’t daycare. If I wanted to have fun, I’d go to Disneyland with my kids.” Well, the seven-time Super Bowl champion may have taken a dig toward Mayfield’s comments on Brady’s time in Tampa Bay. Appearing on Casa De Klub podcast last week, the 29-year-old QB said, “The building was a little bit different with Tom in there. Obviously, playing-wise. Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out.”

But Mayfield didn’t stop at the culture that Brady had going in Tampa Bay, as he continued with the stories that were spoken after Brady retired, “You hear some of the stories about if he didn’t like a certain play call and he didn’t like it throughout the week, and they still call it in the game, there might have been a throwaway on purpose or throwing it at the running back or receiver’s feet.” Although there isn’t any solid footage of Brady throwing intentional passes toward receivers’ feet, Mayfield may not have liked those stories.

Most people thought that after Brady left the Buccaneers, they would find themselves in a compromised position. However, the Bucs have remained a strong contender for the playoffs every season since Tom Brady hung up his cleats. They are the only team from the NFC who have qualified for the playoffs for four seasons straight. Meanwhile, last season’s NFC South title was their third consecutive win, which made it even more impressive.

Although the Bucs have managed to steady their ship in Tampa Bay, Mayfield’s contributions have played a huge role in that success.

Baker Mayfield filling up Tom Brady’s shoes in Tampa Bay

Having signed with the Buccaneers in 2023, it was Mayfield’s fourth team in the NFL after making his debut for the Browns in 2018. Well, he was an instant success in Tampa Bay, as Mayfield finished with 4,044 passing yards and 28 TDs. He even spoke about the big shoes everyone expects him to fill after Brady retired prior to his debut, “I’m excited about it. Those are big shoes to fill, but I’m just going to try and wear my own. He’s the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, and he deserves that recognition. I’m going to be myself, and Tom was himself.”

Well, Baker Mayfield may have managed to build himself an impression in Tampa Bay as left tackle Tristan Wirfs shared, “I had a relationship with Tom, but it wasn’t like the relationship I have with Bake. It’s just different. It’s hard to explain, you know?” Since Brady has vacated his position in the Buccaneers, they have turned out to be the youngest squad in the NFL, with an average age of 25.3. But when Brady was in the house calling out plays, they were the oldest, with an average age of 27.15 years.

Although there’s no comparison between Brady and Mayfield in terms of Super Bowl success, the Bucs QB has done an excellent job from the get-go. Will we continue to see those same heights this week as the Buccs aim for one more win of this season against the Eagles?
