As the Kansas City Chiefs survived the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills 32-29, fireworks went off at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, leaving spectators in awe. The former is on its way to a historic three-peat at the Super Bowl; Something that has occurred in almost every other major sport in the US but not yet in professional football. They are set to face the Philadelphia Eagles, but here’s the thing: Going by the past, they may be the team with the best chance of stomping all over the red side’s aspirations.
Let us flip the pages of history for a moment and go back to 2017. The New England Patriots won Super Bowl LI (34-28) against the Atlanta Falcons. With this win, Tom Brady became the first quarterback in the league to win five Super Bowls, but the big win was a tough one to come by. Commissioner Roger Goodell was relentlessly booed when he handed the team their Vince Lombardi Trophy. This was the aftermath of suspending the QB for the first four games of the season as retribution due to the Deflategate scandal. However, this win could have been the start of a three-peat for them.
You see, the following year, the Patriots once again advanced to the Super Bowl. They had to face the Philadelphia Eagles. ‘The Iggles’, led by quarterback Nick Foles, showcased fantastic offensive play and walked away with the trophy, 41-33. The Pats still ended up making history; Just not the kind they would want to. They became the first team in the league to record more than 600 yards of offense in a single game and still lose. But wait!

If the Eagles won that ‘Super Sunday’ game, does that mean the Patriots were nowhere close to a three-peat? Well, that’s not the case.
In 2019, Super Bowl LIII witnessed Tom Brady’s team lift the trophy once again after they defeated the Los Angeles Rams. “We fought through it more than anything. It’s unbelievable to win this game,” the QB told reporters after the win. Here’s the interesting twist. Had the team defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, they would have been the first team to create history with a three-peat! Now many football fans are wondering if the Eagles will be the ones to stop the Chiefs in their ambitious aim, just like how they unknowingly stopped the Pats.
However, apart from the Patriots, teams like the Denver Broncos (1997-99 season), Dallas Cowboys (1992-94 season), and San Francisco 49ers (1988-90 season) were incredibly close to three consecutive wins but fell short.
Date | Venue | Outcome |

Feb. 4, 2018 | U.S. Bank Stadium (Minneapolis) | Philadelphia 41, New England 33 |
Feb. 3, 2019 | Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta) | New England 13, Los Angeles Rams 3 |
Super Bowl LIX, which will take place on February 9, 2025, will ultimately decide whether the NFL will have its first three-peat!
Interesting Fact: Sure, the Chiefs want to become the very first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. But did you know that it was the Packers who originally won three back-to-back NFL titles from 1929 to 1931? This was during the pre-Super Bowl era.
What’s your perspective on:
Can the Eagles crush the Chiefs' dreams of a historic three-peat, or will history be made?
Have an interesting take?
Can the Philadelphia Eagles avenge their loss against the Kansas City Chiefs?
The Chiefs’ three-peat is based on the Eagles’ 2023 loss (LVII); It became the stepping stone for their futuristic vision and after they defeated the San Francisco 49ers the following year, things started looking really optimistic.

The Chiefs could bank on their defense to earn them another victory, considering they finished the regular season fourth in scoring defense and scored 19.2 points per game. That being said, there are some concerns they need to address, like QB protection issues. We can’t forget that Mahomes was sacked 36 times in the regular season (that’s the most in his career) and also five times in the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Eagles have a great defense and running game. Saquon Barkley is the man to look out for. With his explosive play and an offensive line that is capable of wearing down the opposition, the Chiefs might have to be careful if they want to make history. Considering the fact that the green defense knows how to snatch the ball away, the upcoming Super Bowl really does sound exciting!

But if you are an Eagles fan, you need to keep your eye on TE Dallas Goedert as well. He shares a nice chemistry with QB Jalen Hurts and one can already imagine their fans chanting ‘Fly, Eagles, Fly!’ during the Super Bowl, as they try to thwart Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s desire to be the best.

Regardless, the Chiefs’ head coach knows who they are up against. “The margin to win and/or lose in this league is so small. The parity is unbelievable,” he stated two days ago. As the Super Bowl inches closer, one can’t help but anticipate some dramatic plays from both sides. What do you think?
