It was heartbreaking when the Chiefs‘ golden run came to an end on Super Bowl LIX. The team suffered one of the worst losses in NFL history against the Eagles. It was evident how frustrated everyone was, particularly HC Andy Reid. Making your squad capable of winning two Super Bowls and reaching the third is not an easy task. But even after doing that, when you fail, man! That’s bad.

But you know what? Andy Reid is not someone who is going to waste a lot of days mourning the loss. So, arguably the best coach in the league has already begun his preparations for a huge comeback. And one former Chiefs player discussed the comeback approach and how he never made the cut.

The player in question is none other than the football safety Justin Reid. After three years with the organization and two Super Bowl victories, Justin was released on March 1, 2025. This release hinted that Andy Reid is making defensive modifications. And the first thing the HC has done is releasing players. Justin Reid admitted that despite his best efforts to continue with the organization, things never worked out. And obviously, the HC was the only reason why not.

The safety was on Up and Adams show where he explained, “No probably, early that second day of free agency. I was actually trying to wait. I was trying to wait to buy time, to see if we could get something worked out. And then you know cards did not fold and then it just didn’t work out. And now you have to end up making the next best decision for yourselves.” It was evident that Justin was a hot free agent whom any team would want. And almost instantaneously after his release, he signed with a $5.5 billion franchise.

Actually, Justin chose to return to his home city after enjoying one of his best tenures with Andy Reid’s squad. And for those who don’t know, he is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and his signing with the New Orleans Saints is more or less a homecoming. After three years with the Chiefs, Justin accumulated some of the team’s greatest statistics. With 265 tackles and 49 games played, the Kansas City defense will undoubtedly miss him.

Fans are criticizing Andy Reid right now about why he released the safety if he was doing well. But, similar incidents have happened several times. Just look at the 49ers trade of DeForest Buckner. Take a look at the Seahawks trading Richard Sherman. All of these teams possessed fantastic defenses, but they definitely needed to refresh them, leading to massive trades or releases. Exactly what Andy is up to right now. After all, the HC needs to take these tough calls after being criticized for the Super Bowl loss. Something that the Chiefs’ players also did.

What’s your perspective on:

Is releasing Justin Reid a smart move by Andy Reid, or a blunder the Chiefs will regret?

Justin Reid has brought out Andy Reid’s blunder in the Super Bowl loss

February 9, 2025, was clearly not the Chiefs’ day. I mean, the way they played the game was definitely not their style. When you compare the Chiefs in that game to the Chiefs in the regular season, there is a significant difference. And while some believe that the difference was due to Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce. The playing members from KC had a different outlook.

On the same episode of the Up and Adams, Justin Reid claimed that Andy Reid was responsible for the team’s poor start. The HC could have been thinking about establishing momentum in the second half, but due to their sluggish start, the game slipped away. Not only that, but the Eagles played far superior football that day, which made them walk on to win the championship. Justin highlighted these things, claiming, “Yeah, I think that that would have made a tremendous impact. They jumped on—they just jumped out so quickly. And then once the bleeding started, it was hard to stop it and turn momentum.”

After the game, there was a fire of rage in the Chiefs camp. This was not a typical Super Bowl for them, it was an opportunity to make history. And while this massive chance slipped away, there is hope that Patrick Mahomes and his team could recover from this. And who knows, possibly they can earn a three peat in the next three years. Only time will tell what happens this year, and how Andy Reid will recover from what happened.
