A sports medicine expert recently scrutinized the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ management of linebacker T.J. Watt’s injury. The player is in his progression through the NFL’s concussion protocol now. Not to mention, this situation puts Watt’s participation in doubt for the Steelers’ Week clash with the Indianapolis Colts.
As the league’s rigorous concussion rules sideline Watt, he cannot return to practice or play until he receives full medical clearance. Because of that, the topic becomes of extreme importance. So, Brian Sutterer took charge and analyzed his injury. His analysis of the injury has many surprises.

T.J. Watt recently experienced a head injury during a game against the New England Patriots. The injury raises significant concerns about concussion protocol adherence. After receiving an inadvertent knee to the face from Ezekiel Elliott in the first play, Watt was not immediately checked for a head injury. He continued to play. It wasn’t until the following day at the Steelers’ facility that he was placed under concussion protocol.
A sports physician, Brian Sutterer analyzed the event and highlighted key oversights. He said, “The use of smelling salts, the introduction of a different visor, and the absence of a thorough halftime check are concerning.” He further added, “With symptoms like a post-game migraine, it’s surprising there wasn’t an earlier evaluation for a head injury.” He also remarked, “They messed this up”
All these factors suggest a lapse in the medical team’s assessment and response, according to the physician’s critique. Now, as the player is already out for his next game, the league is expected to look further into the matter. Additionally, even though Watt is not playing for now, before his injury he had a stellar season.
