Former Denver Broncos‘ TE Shannon Sharpe has come hard on Russell Wilson and his squad after their below-par performance on Christmas Eve. The Broncos’ playoff hopes took a major hit after the loss 26-23 against the Patriots and that too at the Empower Field at Mile High. Everyone thought that the Broncos would make it, but the Pats had some other plans in store.
After securing a first-half lead of 7-3, the Broncos were rightly ahead. It came down to the avoidable mistakes that came at the crucial moment. Mr. Unlimited and the Co. lacked the necessary backing to secure this win. A recap of the game would reveal how ‘offensive struggles’ and ‘missed opportunities’ can cost a must-win game. Well, Shannon Sharpe’s post-game analysis comes as a reality check.

On ‘Nightcap’ Shannon Sharpe rightly admitted that the Broncos didn’t play well. He pointed out the mistake that happened in the first half itself. The Broncos sacked QB Bailey Zappe and did not build up on the drive afterward. Sharpe was right to say, “You would like to get points out of that drive”. He fumbled a little, then kept his point. “I mean excuse me a touchdown out of that drive,” Sharpe added.
He rightly noticed that when the Broncos missed the drive, the Patriots managed to score three jaw-dropping TDs during the third quarter. He gave due credit to the Pats hitting the right note, “But then the Broncos got really sloppy. They(Broncos) turned the ball over a couple of times, fumbled on the kick return, and gave up a touchdown without the offense getting on the field which is very deflating”.
In a crowded race for playoffs, there is no margin for minor errors too. Sharpe indeed gave credit to the Broncos’ resurgence in the last two minutes as he thought they had an opportunity “to possibly win the game.” He mentioned the reason, “They forced the Patriots to go three and out”. He also pointed out the forced punts by the Pats that the Broncos could have avoided.
But still, Sharpe acknowledged that the Broncos got the ball in their hands and should have kept the rhythm by covering yards and wanted the Broncos to Build on that. He praised the last-quarter efforts by the Broncos, but the last resurgence went in vain as Chad Ryland’s 56-yard field goal sealed the deal for the Pats. The Pats are happy that they cliched their fourth, but the Broncos are in trouble.

Playoffs dreams are a distant reality for the Broncos
The Broncos are staring down the barrel as their chances to reach playoffs are looking slimmer than ever with just two rounds left. On a clear note, the Broncos now need to win the next two while hoping that the Kansas City Chiefs will lose their next one. What are the odds? Despite a ‘mid-season surge’, the team hasn’t finished any week in possession of a playoff spot. The team now has a 5% chance to make it to the playoffs per NFL’s data.

The Broncos made the most promising comebacks after losing five of their first six, but the recent losses have made sure that the Broncos hope to secure a playoff spot after seven years can beat the dust. The Broncos will face the must-win games against the Chargers and the Raiders in upcoming weeks. But again, that will be no cakewalk for the team that sits 11th in the AFC standings.
