Fans have a very myopic take on things sometimes. In the heat of the moment, when everything is going wrong, the fans don’t refrain from calling the teams out. The same happened with Mike McCarthy, who couldn’t help the Dallas Cowboys win the wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers. But is it right to jump to conclusions?

After an abysmal game, people thought Jerry Jones would fire Mike McCarthy. But here he is, preparing the Dallas Cowboys for another season. In hindsight, the owner’s decision might have been correct. Pat McAfee dissects the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching situation in the latest installment of his eponymous show. The host compared Andy Reid and McCarthy, and some exciting themes surfaced.

Is Mike McCarthy statistically like Andy Reid?

Tone Digs of the show pointed out how Mike McCarthy has stats like all the big-time coaches like John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, and even Sean Payton. His post on X said, “Crazy how similar these records are. John Harbaugh: 160-99. Playoff 11-9. 1 SB. Mike Tomlin: 173-100-2. Playoff 8-10. 1 SB. Mike McCarthy: 167-102-2. Playoff 11-11 1 SB. Sean Payton: 160-98. Playoff 9-8. 1 SB.”

He added to it by saying that McCarthy is 12-5 in his last three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. For a team that hasn’t won a Super Bowl title or championship games in decades, McCarthy has taken them far. He mentioned how the media doesn’t push the narrative of Mike Tomlin being unable to take the Steelers to a playoff game or Sean Payton’s relationship with Russell Wilson but is ready to slander Mike McCarthy at any time.

The conversation then shifted to Andy Reid, and it was pointed out that Andy Reid was 1-3 in the playoffs in his first four years with the Kansas City Chiefs. Digs pointed out how McCarthy was always successful in his tenure with the Packers, unlike Andy Reid’s career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Andy Reid basically had the exact same record situation as Big Mike does in his first or in his last 3. It was 11 and 5, I think 11 and 5, and a 12 and 4, 1 in 3 in playoffs, and then, OK. Andy Reid gets Patrick Mahomes.” Per the co-host, Patrick Mahomes became the turning point in Reid’s career.

All this begs the question of whether Andy Reid could achieve the same without Mahomes. But other things come into play when a win is concerned.

Do the Cowboys have what it takes to win a championship game?

Of course, they do. However, the host pointed out that it’s a two-way street between the media and the Dallas Cowboys. On the one hand, there is a narrative that Dak Prescott is a “terrible” QB, and on the other hand, Mike McCarthy couldn’t manage to squeeze a win with Dak Prescott at the front. Despite the Cowboys’ phenomenal roster, things didn’t go their way.

The host pointed out the example of the LA Chargers. Despite having a fantastic roster, Brandon Staley was fired after the Chargers had a disheartening end to their season. But the same thing didn’t happen with Mike McCarthy because of what he can do.

Jerry Jones’ latest statement revealed more than what we needed to know about his stance on the coaching situation. It’s his team, and he sees the ins and outs of what is going wrong. Maybe he knows something about McCarthy and decided not to fire him; also, perhaps it’s because it’s his last year with the Cowboys, per their agreement.
