Even though Patrick Mahomes is now a 3-time Super Bowl champ, he hasn’t forgotten his roots back at Texas Tech. Recently, Mahomes’ old team scored big by landing their highest-rated recruit ever, WR Micah HudsonThe 6-foot-1 pass catcher, ranked highest in the ESPN 300 class of 2024, chose the Red Raiders among other teams from Texas, Alabama, and Texas A&M.

Before signing for Texas Tech, Hudson already pulled off impressive numbers during his junior career where he caught 65 passes for 1,198 yards with 14 touchdowns. Even his first three games for senior season saw Hudson rack up 17 catches for 317 yards, including three touchdowns. Seems like the numbers speak for themselves as Patrick Mahomes also got a glimpse of Hudson’s ability on the gridiron. Reposting a picture on his official account in X where Hudson can be seen hanging on an insane catch, Patrick Mahomes said, “That’s crazy…..!”

Speaking about crazy, the catch itself was phenomenal. With Hudson’s eyes firmly on the ball while waiting for the perfect moment to catch. He surely left one for the cameras to capture as he grasped onto the ball with his fingertips. Even head coach Joey McGuire is equally excited to have the five-star rated WR under his command. While discussing Hudson’s prospect on the first team, McGuire said, “I don’t think you’ll ever hear me say we’re going to redshirt Micah Hudson. I think from day one, from the time that he’s here, he will have a presence on this football team.”

Despite the hype, Hudson’s first few days at Texas Tech were pretty low-key. As the rookie is still recovering from an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee from an injury suffered during his high school days. On his eventual return, Hudson might find himself starting as an inside or outside receiver depending upon the game plan formulated by OC Zach Kittley. With other offensive players like Josh Kelly, Caleb Douglas, and first-time starter QB Behren Morton. This season, McGuire’s team might be able to build off a seven-win campaign like initially planned.

Although Hudson’s career is only just starting, Mahomes also spent a chunk of his career at Texas Tech. But how did Mahomes fare during his time for the Red Raiders before eventually getting drafted by the Chiefs in the 2017 season?

Looking back at Patrick Mahomes time at Texas Tech

Like Hudson, Mahomes also didn’t have a smooth start to his Texas Tech days. Although most fans now remember him as the best at his position while giving him ‘Goat’ status. At one time, Mahomes didn’t even start for his college team. Davis Webb was the one who started over Mahomes for the first three games of the season. Reminiscing those days, Mahomes at one time thought it would be better if he moved to another team to get opportunities. However, Patrick Mahomes Sr. stepped in to stop that from happening, to which he said, “We don’t transfer. We compete”.

Eventually, Mahomes time came during the fourth game of the season, when Webb injured himself during a third-quarter run against Oklahoma State. From then on, Mahomes didn’t look back as his first official numbers read, 2 passes out of 5, 29 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception, and 7 carriers. But his team eventually lost to Oklahoma State whose WR Tyreek Hill at one point became Mahomes teammate for the Chiefs.

Throughout that season, Mahomes was in and out of the team but when Webb transferred to California Golden Bears in 2016. Mahomes grasped a starting opportunity while getting his eventual move to an NFL team rather than another NCAA club. Webb, who never managed to reach his potential in the NFL, has currently taken up the role of QB coach for the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, Mahomes is projected to win a 3-peat with the Chiefs on the back of a sensational last few seasons.

However, will Hudson follow in Mahomes’ footsteps and become the next big thing out of Texas Tech? Only time will tell, but the future sure looks bright for the 5-star recruit.
