“They must’ve gone to that suite for Taylor Swift 9,000 times,” yelled Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo after CBS aired Super Bowl LVIII, which saw the Chiefs win their second in a row. The billionaire pop star was there to cheer her boyfriend, TE Travis Kelce. It’s a new year. The Chiefs are back in the AFC Championship game, against the Bills — one step away from their third consecutive Super Bowl. Taylor Swift wasn’t in the crowd during the regular season as her Eras Tour kept her busy. But the tour is finished. It’s playoff football time. She’s back… and Mad Dog is still angry.
Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes combined for a beautiful touchdown against the Texans in the divisional round, taking their team to victory. Kelce even broke Jerry Rice‘s record for the most post-season games with 100+ receiving yards. But Mad Dog was still angry. Angry about why Taylor Swift was shown in the broadcast. He took a sharp dig at the couple and said, “I’ve had enough with Kelce. I’ve had enough with the girlfriend.”
The Girlfriend? Travis Kelce’s girlfriend doesn’t need the cameras, the cameras need her. In fact, the Chiefs owner’s daughter, Gracie Hunt shared that Taylor’s expanded the Chiefs base by 30-40%. But Russo didn’t stop there. After insulting her as just being Travis Kelce’s girlfriend, he even attacked her fanbase.

Taylor Swift’s worldwide popularity is unmatched. Fans go crazy whenever she has any announcement. Her production company confirmed in December last year that Eras Tour brought in $2 billion in ticket sales. But Mad Dog refused to have any of that and added, “When Taylor Swift’s Bob Dylan, come back and talk to me. Come back and talk to me when she has that impact. Not for the 18-year-old girls like my daughter… When you change music, come back and talk to me.” Really? The Times literally named her ‘Bob Dylan of our age.‘ Fans love her charisma, even if it’s mostly teenage girls and young women. But no one can make someone believe anything they don’t want to. The double insult for “Travis Kelce’s girlfriend” was unacceptable by any standards. Russo even broke away from his own stance.
After Super Bowl LVIII, he acknowledged her appeal and mentioned, “Listen, I know she’s a huge superstar.” But his real complaint is about these women cheering for the Chiefs when they are mere Swifties. But it’s not Taylor’s fault. And he should accept this fact. He knows the relationship is genuine, and he even likes that aspect as he claimed, “I do think that’s a caring relationship, which I don’t think it’s fake. That I like.” However, the hatred is deep-seated. And it doesn’t stop at Taylor Swift.
Fans were awestruck seeing the singer hug WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark in the suite. But Chris Russo had the opposite reaction. He expanded his Swift rant to include Clark.
Chris Russo insults WNBA star
After claiming he had enough of Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, he felt miffed when he saw Caitlin Clark sitting with her. He took a subtle dig at Indiana Fever’s point guard while saying, “Now I got Caitlin Clark in the mix. Who, by the way, I saw Caitlin Clark play, what, 50 games in college basketball the last two years? Parts of it. I never heard one reference, never saw her father with a Chief jersey on, never saw her with a Chief hat on. I heard not one reference in 50 games that she was a Chief fan, and then all of a sudden now she’s a big Kansas City fan. Come on, stop, please. I understand you want to be a fan because they win.” Well, Chris Russo needs to get fact-checked.
An admirer of Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, she called them one of the best duos in sports. Born and raised in Iowa, she, her brother, and her father are lifelong Chiefs fans. She talked about her love for the team during a November 2023 appearance on the ManningCast. It also showed her childhood photo with her brother and cousins, all of them wearing Chiefs jerseys. Even the Chiefs posted her childhood photo on X, thanking her for the support. There’s your answer.

On top of that, does Caitlin really need to do this just for publicity? She has been smashing records, bringing in an unprecedented viewership. A recent study claimed that ‘The Caitlin Clark Effect’ brought in $136 million in sponsor media value. 45% of the WNBA’s broadcast value this season came from her Indiana Fever games. She’s sent merchandise sales soaring to levels never seen before in her league. So, Mad Dog taking aim at her just doesn’t make sense.

The Chiefdom is angry. These are not comments they expect from someone who is a fellow Chiefs fan. But expect more such rants from all corners as Travis Kelce & co. inch closer to a history-making 3-peat. Maybe ‘The Girlfriend’ will write a song about it to make some money, eh Mad Dog?
