Brock Purdy was one of the 4 athletes in contention against Lamar Jackson in the NFL Honors MVP race. The 24-year-old secured 97 against Jackson’s 493 to place fourth. “Brock is the leader of this team. Everything starts with him. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with,” fellow 49ers and Offensive Player of the Year winner, Christian McCaffrey stated. Purdy joined the team after a lack of recognition by rest and a keen eye of coach Kyle Shanahan in 2022. The youngster was placed as a fourth-choice quarterback when most teams carried only three. In the process, former ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ was stuck along, only for him to seize the opportunity and rise, and only rise.

A shining rookie for the 49ers

It is no news that Brock Purdy wasn’t a top pick during the 2022 draft. Despite an impressive run at Iowa State, the youngster wasn’t an agreeable pick for many scouts. But the 49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan, who had viewed his college tape, chose him as the 262nd and final recruit of the draft. And just when things seemed a bit flat on the graph, the team’s two star quarterbacks were ruled out due to injuries. It was then that Purdy rose to the occasion and led the team to seven straight wins in the 2022 rookie season.

The next season, the 49ers had enough confidence in him to add him back and trade the initial QBs. Brock Purdy led the team in passer ratings and threw the third-most touchdowns. In the process, he will now be heading to his first Super Bowl. MVP or not, Brock Purdy has shown he is far from ‘Mr Irrelevant’. “…he’s a winner and he’s a guy that goes out there and competes,” Patrick Mahomes aptly says about Purdy.
