The Kirk Cousins curse is well and running. Its latest victim, the San Francisco 49ers, reached the furthest of any team. However, they succumbed to the last hurdle. But what is the Kirk Cousins curse!

The Washington Redskins drafted cousins at the 2012 NFL Draft. The QB then joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. Over more than a decade and with two different teams, this curse has been potent.

The Niners fall prey to the Kirk Cousins’ curse

The curse states that any team that ends up getting defeated by the team for which Kirk Cousins is playing in the regular season cannot progress much in the playoffs. The Niners became the first-ever team to go to the Super Bowl after defeating Cousins in the regular season.

And it looked like the curse had been broken. However, they could not win the entire thing! Even after gaining the lead in the fourth quarter, with a mere 6 seconds left on the clock.

The game got tied and then, in overtime; the Niners lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22. But the Niners are lucky to get this far in the postseason. Teams before them did not have such luck!

A history of the curse working

Throughout the QB’s career, including the Niners, the curse has affected 14 teams! Cousins did not beat any team, that progressed through to the playoffs from 2012 to 2015. The curse effectively started in 2016 and has taken multiple teams within a single season too!

Previously, only the Green Bay Packers had managed to reach the NFC Championship game twice in 2016 and 2020. This year the Niners became the third-ever team to do so but couldn’t secure the Super Bowl.
