For all we know, Brock Purdy has come so far from being labeled a “system QB” and “Mr. Irrelevant.” As the San Francisco 49ers made their way to the playoffs, it became apparent that Purdy could do it all. Extending plays, creating pockets, faking the ball, or even running it, the Niners quarterback is more than capable of shutting his opponents down, and he did it when everyone least expected him to. Case in point: the divisional round game against the Lions.

Ahead of the Super Bowl, everyone is eyeing Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes. While people know about Mahomes’ two-time Super Bowl Champion status, Purdy is appearing as the new champion of the people. The guy made it to a Super Bowl in his second year in the NFL. That’s something commendable, even if you can’t look past the “system QB” label. Former Panthers HC Matt Rhule has the same thoughts about him.

Matt Rhule is an avid Brock Purdy supporter

Rhule was in a press conference when he decided to talk about the Niners QB and how he might have been responsible for creating awareness about Purdy to some degree. He mentioned how Purdy is an “amazing” player and mentioned that he has had a brief stint with him at Iowa State. Rhule also claims that he pushed Purdy’s name on the draft board.

“I think Brock Purdy is an amazing player, because I played against him at Iowa State. When I was in the draft room at Carolina, I brought his name up. I said, ‘Hey, guys, he should be on the draft board. I got vetoed on that one.” Said Rhule about the 49ers QB.

Rhule had a tip for anyone who was going against Purdy, and coincidentally, Patrick Mahomes has some similar traits as Purdy. Matt Rhule highlighted how Purdy’s fake passes don’t fail to fool the DBs.

“Do not, do not, fall for his pump fakes,” said the former Panthers coach about Purdy.

Brock Purdy has his opponents shaken

The most viral video of Brock Purdy was in the game against the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. It was the first quarter, but Purdy didn’t want the defense to think that they had him cornered. What does he do? He decided to pump fake the ball once, throwing off the other players, and did it again before he passed the ball to George Kittle, who rushed for a touchdown.

In another instance, we can see the DBs and other defensive players struggling to get a hold of Brock Purdy because he is so good at faking the passes and resetting his motion. We haven’t seen Patrick Mahomes move like this, ever! He has a sharp mind and even sharper motor skills.

Maybe these traits will help Purdy get the best out of Mahomes.
