The Super Bowl is upon us! And two familiar teams will be facing each other in the Kansas City Chiefs vs the San Francisco 49ers. It will be a rematch of the SB LIV in 2020, and the former QB Alex Smith is predicting trouble in store for the Bay area team.

Even though the 49ers are considered to be the favorites after securing the top seed in the NFC. And have been phenomenal on both sides of the ball in the regular season. The 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Smith is worried about the defensive qualities of the 49ers.

Alex Smith comes out with his assessment

The 39-year-old was drafted by the 49ers as their first pick in 2005. He then was traded to the Chiefs, where he played till 2017 and had Patrick Mahomes under his wing. So, he is pretty familiar with both franchises.

“This 49ers defense doesn’t do a lot, they don’t present a lot of volume”, criticized Smith. He was full of praise for the Chiefs’ defense in the postseason. “This Chiefs defense just continues to elevate their game”, said Smith on the ‘Adam Schefter Podcast’.

However, he also outlined a scenario, by which the 49ers can win the Super Bowl. “The only chance, I think the 49ers have to win is a little bit of a shootout”, he said. But, this upcoming fixture is sure to be exciting.

An impenetrable defense for Super Bowl

In the postseason, the Chiefs have held their defensive line brilliantly. This was showcased against two of the scariest offenses in the league this season. Both the Ravens and the Dolphins were bled dry for scoring opportunities. The Chiefs managed to stop them both at 17 points combined. On the other hand, the 49ers defense has been leaky in the playoffs, giving away 52 points in just two games. With this, the Chiefs looking to secure back-to-back Super Bowls.

In the process of becoming the 9th-ever team to defend their Super Bowl title amongst the 57 winners. The last team to reach this historic feat was the New England Patriots, in 2003 and 2004.
