Philly fans are stocking up their Philadelphia Eagles’ merchandise very quickly. Obviously, after the 2022 season, it is another chance for the franchise to try again for the Super Bowl. As Jalen Hurts’s team is going to face their old rival, the Kansas City Chiefs, they have one important thing to keep in mind, as per the NFL legend.

On Monday, Drew Brees appeared in the new episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd podcast. During the discussion, he was asked about the Chiefs’ defensive coach, Steve Spagnuolo. And how his strategies can create trouble for Jalen Hurts and his Eagles. According to him, there is one thing that the Eagles need to keep in mind in order to win. And that is, “to stay ahead of the chains.” He is correct.

Many hail Spagnuolo as one of the league’s strongest defensive coaches. That’s the reason why the Chiefs’s defense team is ranked at 9 with a 320.6 average yards, per FOX Sports. Even in the AFC game, Steve Spagnuolo made his presence felt, as he was able to stop Josh Allen on multiple QB sneaks. So, now as the Chiefs are heading into the Super Bowl for a rematch with the Eagles, will Jalen Hurts be able to dodge Spagnuolo’s trap?

Well, Drew Brees hopes so! The NFL legend explained, “If you are in third and long too much in this game, you don’t have a chance right, because he is so good at the disguise and he’s so good at…getting an overload and getting a free rusher that you’re, then just in a situation where man you just have to get lucky that you can make that guy (Spagnuolo) miss or you can buy enough time in order to find somebody open down the field you have to stay ahead of the chains against Spags.” And well, that’s where Spagnuolo’s defense excels, because if you can’t run the ball and keep the offense in manageable situations, you’re already at a disadvantage.

Not only that! Brees also made an important comparison to the way teams like the Eagles work. With Jalen Hurts at QB, the offense becomes more dynamic. Hurts, like Lamar Jackson, can be an extra blocker in the running game. This creates space for Saquon Barkley, giving him one-on-one opportunities that he’s been winning all season. When they can keep the chains moving with plays like this, and mix in some solid play-action passes, it makes it much harder for a defense to stop them.

But Brees made it clear! If Philly gets stuck in too many third-and-longs, they have no choice left. They’re just not built for drop-back passing in those situations. So, all in all, staying ahead of the chains is the key, and Brees thinks that’s something the Eagles are usually very good at. Besides this, coach Nick Sirianni is also good at one thing – and that was letting Jalen Hurts show the world what he can do.

Jalen Hurts is playing his game now?

No one can forget how the Eagles crushed the Commanders in the NFC Championship game. They completely dominated them with 55-23. This suggests that Philly changed something that day. But what? Well, during a post-game presser, Jalen Hurts joked that coach Nick Sirianni “let me out of my straitjacket a little bit today.” So, Hurts was free to show the world what he can do. And he did it well!

With 262 yards and 4 touchdowns, Jalen Hurts led his team to the Super Bowl LIX. In addition, Saquon Barkley too gave him full support. He wrapped up the game with 118 yards and three touchdowns. And who can forget his massive 60-yard touchdown run in the first play? Now as Jalen Hurts and Eagles have won massively with this approach, it’s quite possible that Sirianni would want Hurts and the Eagles to perform in a similar way.

So, that means they are likely to give the Chiefs a tough battle. Let’s see whether they can take the 2023 Super Bowl revenge or not!
