So it’s another match day for the Dallas Cowboys as they will host the Houston Texans for their week 11 clash at the AT&T stadium. Things haven’t been great for Mike McCarthy and Co. for the past four weeks, as they are currently on a four-game losing streak. It’s a now-or-never situation for the Cowboys, as one more loss could very well mean the end of their playoff dreams. In an attempt to change the approach, McCarthy has named Rico Dowdle as the lead running back.

In a recent interview at the ‘105.3 The Fan’, Jerry Jones’ son and executive VP and CEO, Stephen Jones, was asked, “Coach said earlier this week that Rico is going to be the lead back. What made now the right time to stop the committee approach?” He backed McCarthy’s new approach. “That’s something the coaches continue to evaluate as you move forward. I think Rico continues to put the play on tape in terms of how he’s doing. For this season, he’s averaged four and a half yards a carry, which is solid. More than solid.”

However, the executive VP also pointed out that the running game hasn’t been the strong suit of the Cowboys’ gameplay in the last couple of games. But Rico Dowdle has been making a difference, per Jones. “I just think he’s earned it, and certainly, the bigger thing we got to do is just continue to be able to do it. Obviously, we’ve gotten in some games where we’ve gotten behind, and it’s tough to stay committed to the run. But when we do run it, Rico’s showing that we can run it and run it effectively.”

The 60-year-old CEO further said that the team has “just got to do it more and more. As everybody likes to say in this league, the key to winning is ‘Run the ball well and stop the runs.’ So, that’s where we are, and we’ve gotta continue to work toward that.”

Well, honestly, the Cowboys‘ run game has surely been one of their major problems overall, and that needs to be fixed first and fast if they are still eyeing to play beyond the regular season in January. McCarthy’s idea of making Dowdle the lead RB might actually be a fix for their issue in hand. The 26-year-old RB has played in eight games this season and has 83 carries for 374 rushing yards.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Mike McCarthy's decision to make Dowdle lead RB a stroke of genius or a desperate gamble?

Have an interesting take?

In the end, it’s hard to say if McCarthy made a wrong or impulsive decision under the pressure of losing four back-to-back games or whether Rico Dowdle would end up being the answer to the Cowboys’ run game problem. All we can do is wait and see how Dowdell performs at his first game as a lead RB on Sunday.

Mike McCarthy makes a Rico Dowdle confession as he looks for answers to fix the offense

Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy has urged that the team ‘has to’ get the ball to the 26-year-old RB Rico Dowdle. He seems to be leaning on the young star to get off the backfield, so much so that he has named him as the new lead RB.

On Thursday, McCarthy lauded the RB and said, “You have to get him the ball. That’s my focus, to continue to get him opportunities. He’s the lead back.” Later Dowdle also reflected on being the new lead RB of the team. He said that it was truly “a great recognition of being the lead back for America’s Team.” However the 26-year-old further added that instead of getting overwhelmed with this new responsibility, he needs to go out there and keep doing what he does day in and day out for his team.

Well, it’s not like Dowdell has done something out of this world for the Cowboys. But he still is the logical choice for the lead RB spot, don’t you think? He is the team’s fastest runner and with Cooper Rush playing QB due to Dak Prescott‘s injury, Dowdle must have more touches in the game so that the team can move the ball consistently around the field.
