Is Dak Prescott's time as the Cowboys' leader over with Micah Parsons taking the spotlight?

The Dallas Cowboys are wasting their offseason.” That’s what Stephen A. Smith thinks, after Jerry Jones’ team hasn’t reached any conclusion on its key players’ contracts. Due to the pressing salary cap constraints of the team and the market rise for quarterbacks, Dak Prescott is still seeing his fate hanging somewhere between the two.

Despite executive Vice President Stephen Jones making an offer to the quarterback and hoping the deal will be done soon, nothing has been said from the quarterback’s or his agent’s side. This discussion is still on! But Smith thinks he shouldn’t be the one to be prioritized!

Micah Parsons is one up from Dak Prescott?

In a recent episode on the Stephen A. Smith Show on July 30, 2024, the host criticized the Cowboys and their quarterback, Dak Prescott. He stated that he sees Micah Parsons as the true face of the franchise. During the discussion, Smith pointed out that he heard Stephen Jones giving Prescott and CeeDee Lamb their offers.

However, another key player, Parsons, was left by America’s team. Opinionating about the same, he compared Prescott and Parsons, stating that the linebacker is more important to the quarterback at the moment. The sportscaster expressed, “I got a problem with that. Micah Parsons should be paid. I don’t give a damn what anybody says, they talk about the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys as the face. To me Micah Parsons is the face of the Cowboys.” But why did he say so?

Smith emphasized that Parsons’ consistent, standout performances make him more deserving of being the face of the Cowboys. Unlike Prescott, whose playoff appearances have been underwhelming (2-5), Parsons has been a reliable and impactful player. According to StatMuse, the linebacker has recorded “8 solo tackles, 10 assists and 1.0 sack in 4 games in the playoffs.”

Hence, Smith believes that the Cowboys should prioritize Parsons over Prescott in their contract dealings, as he would reportedly come more handy than the QB in future. But if we look at stats, it’s clearly visible that Prescott too had a good season last year. He threw for 4,516 yards and led the NFL with 36 touchdowns. Additionally, his performance earned him “second-team All-Pro honors and a third Pro Bowl” nod. Probably, that’s what exec-VP Jones saw in him.

And unlike Smith’s thought process, Jones believes Prescott is still an important piece to their puzzle.
