Steph Curry not a top-five player? Do you agree with Patrick Mahomes' dad's bold claim?

Patrick Mahomes Sr. knows how to get all the attention on him. While his son Patrick Mahomes dons the gridiron, he has his moments a bit differently. As a retired MLB player, you’d think Pat Sr. would stick to baseball. But his recent call-out of Steph Curry took everyone by surprise, especially with Curry making headlines for his new one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Warriors, keeping him under contract through 2026-2027. Seems Pat Sr. wants a piece of the action and isn’t shy about sharing his opinions.

Speaking on 2 Gems and Mic Sports Podcast, on August 29th, Pat ‘Silky P’ Mahomes said, “You know, some people think Steph Curry is a top 5 player. In my book, he is not a top 5 player.” Everything about this statement seemed to be coming out as odd. Right from the statement itself, the ease with which he said it without stuttering, to no one raising an eyebrow at it. Well, he believes in his statement, that’s for certain.

Before you jump on him, the Mahomes family patriarch made it clear. It’s his opinion and doesn’t have to be universally accepted. He stands by it, and that’s a bold way to share your thoughts. For all of you who are wondering, the conversation heated up when a co-host called Pat Sr. out for not putting former WNBA star, and the Hall of Famer, Maya Moore in the Top 5. However, he quickly clarified, “I said, in my opinion, she wasn’t a top-five player. That doesn’t mean it’s universal around the world.”

Well, well, well. Let’s just take his opinions with a pinch of salt, if you think otherwise. We can understand your feelings, too. Chef Curry is, indeed, a freak of nature with how he cooks in those 3-pointers with ease. And his latest exploits for the Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics might never be forgotten. Forging a dream team with Kevin Durant and LeBron James, Steph and Co. brought heat to the Parisian courts. And now, the cherry on the top, the extension. The pieces are falling right as they should. But for Pat Sr.? Not so much.

Guess what his son would have to say about this? Especially as the Chiefs’ star Patrick Mahomes holds a special bond with Steph Curry, one that’s well-recorded. Uh-oh! We hope this does not become another reason for the father-son bond to grow further apart. Considering, some speculation has suggested that it has been a bit shaky in the recent past.

Patrick Mahomes and Steph Curry’s worlds meet on golf courses!

“If I’d play basketball, I’d just be like Steph Curry… That’s who I’d be.” There’s a want and then there’s the potential. But Patrick Mahomes meant both ways when he said this back in February 2024 with a smirk on his face. Those two? Well, they are allowed to banter. Their closeness and brotherhood toward each other is what friends would want to hope for.

What’s your perspective on:

Steph Curry not a top-five player? Do you agree with Patrick Mahomes' dad's bold claim?

Have an interesting take?

On 6th February 2024, the NY Post published an exclusive with Steph Curry. The title is what’s important in our context: “Stephen Curry opens up about his uncanny Patrick Mahomes kinship.” It’s not so much about the kinship per se, but the similarities Curry brought about during the interview are interesting. “What the game has given me in terms of a reach and platform, I embrace it for sure. I lean into it and don’t take it for granted. I appreciate that Patrick’s in that same boat [in the NFL].”

Appreciation aside, these two are passionate about golf, where their worlds collide. Remember The Match from the summer of 2023 in Vegas? When Steph Curry and Klay Thompson faced off against Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Curry, ever the good sport, admitted, “We play that match five times, we win four of them.” Despite Mahomes and Kelce’s surprising victory, Curry acknowledged their impressive play, saying they didn’t see them in a single fairway for the first 10 holes.

While Pat Sr. might have his reservations about Curry, it’s clear that the younger Mahomes sees a bit of himself in Steph—and that’s where the magic lies. So, as the NFL season kicks off, and the Chef continues cooking on the court, the question remains: Will Patrick Mahomes rise to the occasion and give his NBA buddy a reason to cheer for him? The 3-peat’s on!
