Shockwaves spread throughout the NFL as reports of Stefon Diggs’ trade to the Houston Texans came to light. While the Texans fans are rejoicing at the upgrading of their roster, there is a gaping hole in the Buffalo Bills offense left with the WR’s exit. And the one player potentially most affected by the change could be the star quarterback of the Bills, Josh Allen.

Diggs was an essential component of the Bills’ roster and a worthy partner to Allen, with stats strong in their favor. Several former NFL players had stressed the importance of their combo to the team’s performance. So, when an online fan expressed his opinions on the contrary, the WR had only two words to retort with.

Is Stefon Diggs “essential” to Allen’s success?

The discourse began when Robert Griffin III opined on X that Stefon Diggs is “essential” to Allen’s success since 2020, and if the two remain united, then the Super Bowl “window is wide open” for the Bills. One fan on X had a counter-opinion to the former quarterback’s post. They said while Allen definitely benefits from Diggs’ support, the WR isn’t necessary for his success as Robert Griffin had stated.

Diggs caught a whiff of the online conversation and had a snarky answer of his own. He simply replied to the fan with, “You sure ?” While one might advise not to read too much between the lines, the entire parley occurred just one day before the trade reports of Diggs shifting from Bills made the table.

It seems like the wide receiver is ready to move on to his new home and assist QB C.J. Stroud in Houston. Not only did the Bills lose the Allen-Diggs chemistry, but they also suffered a significant dead cap hit around $31 million. So, with a decent 11-6 record last season, why did the Bills decide to cut ties with their leading wide receiver?

Why did the Buffalo Bills trade Diggs?

On paper, the decision seems to be a bad one. Former players like RGIII and Chad Johnson expressed their support for the Allen-Diggs combination. Plus, there’s the heavy hit on the salary cap. So when logistically the trade seems illogical, it’s definitely intriguing why the Bills undertook such a decision. It seems the answer lies in the team’s new offense strategy.

When Joe Brady took over as the offensive coordinator, the focus shifted from Diggs to encompassing the entire offense. While it doesn’t hurt to have an experienced WR, the position was under the constant threat of the opposing defense. So, instead of investing in additional support for Diggs, the Bills, who were already in a tight cap space situation, decided to clean things up. While the trade puts them in a heavy dead cap situation, it might help in their cap space in 2025.

Moreover, Allen is working well on Brady’s offense and holds the top spot in PFF’s quarterback ranking for the previous season. With that, Diggs joins his new home, the Houston Texans, after spending four seasons with the Bills. The 2015 draft had 1,183 receiving yards, 107 receptions, and eight touchdowns last season and promises to bring fresh energy to Houston’s offense. What do you think about the decision?
