The Steelers‘ QB dilemma has been a heated topic since 2024. Difficulty of choosing between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields ultimately cost the team the 2024 playoffs. But, even after the big loss, the team’s confusion has persisted. Yep, it’s still ongoing! While the team’s owner, Art Rooney, prefers Wilson because of his experience, Fields has a lot of support backstage as well. Confusing, right! But there’s a piece of good news on this matter. One of the two QBs may have finally gained a significant advantage behind the scenes.
Things are looking a little hot for Pittsburgh. For an extended period, the team alternated between Wilson and Fields. In the meantime, they considered bringing in a third QB, but that idea was scrapped. And they were back at square one. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents going in 2025, and it is currently believed that the team is looking to sign them both again. But this time, Fields currently has an edge over Wilson for the position of starting QB.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler gave a sneak peek into what’s going on behind-the-scenes at the Steelers front office: “The sense I get is that Justin Fields has an edge over Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh’s pecking order of free agent quarterbacks. There is sentiment for Fields in the building, and both sides would be open to a return. The Steelers have at least another week to crystallize those plans, and they certainly haven’t ruled out Wilson at this point.”
Justin Fields getting the starting QB position will not be that surprising. The 25-year-old has already expressed an interest in returning to the team on one condition. The QB claimed that he would only consider returning if they offered him the position of starting quarterback. And this is not just for a few games, but for quite some time. The Steelers should take this condition seriously as Fields already has potential offers from teams like the Jets and the Raiders.
The young QB simply wants to prove his worth on the field, thus he is requesting opportunities from the team. Many NFL luminaries even criticised the Steelers’ decision to pick Russell Wilson over Justin Fields.

Ben Roethlisberger prefers Justin Fields to Russell Wilson
When it comes to past Steelers explosive QBs, Ben Roethlisberger is at the top of the list. Everyone enjoyed the quarterback’s plays, and the fact that he remained committed to Pittsburgh for 18 years is simply unbelievable. But it seems like the former QB is not happy with what his team is doing right now. He is furious at the fact that his squad is not even putting forth their best effort in the league. Roethlisberger stated in an interview that Fields is someone who deserves to be the starting quarterback. The man has proven himself, and choosing Russell Wilson is simply a stupid decision.
The former QB even attacked Wilson, noting that despite his experience, he is throwing some bad passes. Not only that, but Roethlisberger believes Russell Wilson would be a better fit for the team as a backup quarterback. Even though he is out of form and not performing well on the field, the player can step in when the team needs him the most. On top of that, Wilson can serve as an excellent background guide for Fields. The quarterback can share his experience with the younger player, helping him improve his skills. At the end, all you want to do is see your team stand tall.
Ben clearly opined: “I would keep him [Justin Fields] in there. And even if he has a bad game, I would keep him in there. Because right now, they’re rolling … I think he’s playing well enough, I think he’s doing enough, you saw with his legs, especially. It’s good to know what you have at the backup and Russ is there if you need him. I think what you’re gonna get from Russ is more pocket presence to throw the ball down the field. But you’re not gonna get that extend-the-play like Justin does. He’s a running back, back there when he decides to run. He’s a really, really talented runner as well.”
