The Steelers found themselves in a bit of a pickle after Justin Fields left, leaving the QB situation a little shaky. The team has lately signed a veteran QB, and no, it’s not Aaron Rodgers. But honestly, their QB puzzle is not fully solved just yet. However, this does not mean they will just sit around twiddling their thumbs. Mike Tomlin‘s team is busy adding players to both sides of the ball. The Steelers’ front office made a splash by bringing in DK Metcalf on offense. And now, they have added a veteran to their defense.
So, who is the latest addition to the Steelers squad? It’s the veteran DE Daniel Ekuale, coming to Pittsburgh straight from New England. Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports that Ekuale and the Steelers have agreed on a contract. The contract numbers are still under wraps, but Daniel’s reps broke the news on IG. The DE’s agent, Blake Baratz, confirmed the new deal on Sunday. Daniel, 31, would be switching teams for the fourth time this season after being on the Pats’ squad for the last four seasons.

The Washington State product originally started his NFL journey with the Browns in 2018 as an undrafted free agent. After two years, Cleveland released Daniel, and he had a brief one-year stint with the Jaguars. Ekuale’s first career sack came two years after his debut, in 2020, against the Vikings. The Jaguars also parted ways with the DE after the 2020 season. The Pats then signed Ekuale to their practice squad. In 2022, Daniel was suspended for the first two games, but the reason for that remained under wraps.
Daniel, in the 2014 season, played in sixteen games, with the DE recording 52 tackles. Ekuale has played in 57 games in his seven-year career. The 31-year-old’s career stats include 91 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, and six sacks. Now, about the Steelers’ QB situation, most of you already know by now that the Steelers have brought in a QB to their squad. But their QB crisis is not over yet. The team’s Aaron Rodgers limbo continues to drag on.

QB crisis in Pittsburgh: Is Aaron Rodgers still in play?
In 2022, after initially showing faith in Mason Rudolph, the Steelers demoted the QB to third on the depth chart. The next year, the team signed a one-year deal with Rudolph. In 2024, after Pittsburgh brought on board Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, they parted ways with Mason. The QB signed another one-year deal, this time with the Tennessee Titans. And now, the Steelers have once again knocked on Rudolph’s door after Justin Fields left them for the Jets and the team moved on from Wilson.
What’s your perspective on:
Steelers fans, is bringing back Mason Rudolph a step forward or a step back for Pittsburgh?
Have an interesting take?
Mason’s NFL journey started with the Steelers in 2018 after the team picked him up in the third round of the draft. Pittsburgh signed the Oklahoma alum to a four-year, $3.92 million contract. He served as the backup to Ben Roethlisberger and remained the backup for three seasons. In 2021, Mason played his career’s first game as the starting QB in Week 10.

The Steelers have once again turned to their former QB, signing him to a two-year, $8 million deal. In his last season with the Titans, Mason racked up 1,530 yards with 9 TDs. Bringing Mason on board was a move nobody saw coming. But now that he has signed with the team, Mike Florio thinks they should see him as Plan A. “I think we need to take Rudolph seriously as a potential Plan A. I think that Rudolph closes the door on Russell Wilson.“
But the QB search isn’t over with Mason. The Steelers are still waiting on Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers’ name has been linked to the Vikings as well. According to reports, the Steelers still have their offer on the table, but the QB has yet to make a decision. It will be interesting to see where Rodgers ends up next and, if he chooses not to sign with Pittsburgh, who the team will turn to next.
