Although the Chiefs Kingdom could argue that Patrick Mahomes has helped them dominate the NFL in recent years, with two Super Bowl MVPs to his name, he couldn’t have done it without his TE Travis Kelce. Kelce, who holds multiple NFL records in his name, hasn’t lived up to expectations this season. After recording more than 950 receiving yards for each of the last eight seasons, Kelce’s production has taken a massive hit this season.
He has often found himself a frustrated figure on the Chiefs offense. Well, one of those instances came last Sunday when the Chiefs somehow managed to come out victorious from Carolina. Trying to catch a Mahomes pass downfield late into the third quarter, Kelce threw both of his hands towards the football. However, he still couldn’t hold on to the pass that could have been a crucial first down.
While Mahomes could be partly blamed for not being completely accurate, Kelce’s frustration was caught on the cameras, as he ended up yelling an expletive out of anger. This might have led to former NFL cornerback Domonique Foxworth calling Kelce possibly ‘cooked’ on his show, “Travis Kelce ain’t right. There’s no explosion.” As for Kelce, he hasn’t really impressed this season. Considering the ceiling he bears in Kansas City, his numbers aren’t where they are supposed to be.

The Chiefs TE, who once recorded the most receiving yards for a single season (1,416) in 2020. Has only 569 receiving yards after 11 games into the season. And that’s not all. Mahomes and Kelce have connected for 51TDs over the years, which puts them third for the most TDs by a QB and TE duo. Apart from the overall record, this season, Kelce has just 2 TDs to his name. His best game came against the Bucs, where he finished with 14 receptions for 100 yards.
Going into week 13, Kelce is yet to cross 100 yards again this season. Although former players and fans could be worried about his numbers so far, Kelce isn’t someone who cares about it.

Travis Kelce’s ambitions go beyond personal records
Just last season, when Kelce was all set to breach his 1,000 receiving yards for the eighth season in a row. He couldn’t manage to pull it off as the Chiefs TE missed the Chargers clash because of a neck issue. Kelce wasn’t really upset as he shared his thoughts on his New Heights Podcast: “It never felt right to go out there chasing stats. If I could get some rest going into next week, and stay off the turf in LA and just avoid some hits, man. I was all for that to gear up for the playoffs here.”
Kelce went on to add how he believes the Super Bowl comes before personal milestones, “I’ve never sat here and said. If I don’t get 1,000 yards my season was a failure. I’ve always had it in my mind if I lose the Super Bowl, that’s failure.” Well, the Chiefs did, in fact, end up winning the Super Bowl LVIII against the 49ers. And Kelce recorded 9 receptions with 93 yards as the Chiefs clinched their second consecutive Lombardi in overtime 22-25.

So far this season, it looks like the Chiefs are in for another Super Bowl run. But the way Kelce is performing still remains a concern during an injury-plagued season for the team. However, considering the veteran he is, Kelce would surely step up the day when his team needs him the most.
