Everyone predicted that Shedeur Sanders would slide to the 10th or 15th spot in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, the Buffs QB’s stock is on the rise again. While Cam Ward is already making a strong case for the No. 1 overall pick, the buzz around Shedeur Sanders continues to grow.
Some experts claimed that none of the top 10 teams are seriously considering Shedeur. Now, those reports have been swiftly debunked. And now, as we edge closer to the NFL Draft scheduled on April 24, 2025, Sanders’ coach, Darrell Colbert Jr., has shared some key advice for his star quarterback. The coach who also trained Cam Ward dropped his two cents on the Rich Eisen Show.
The coach stated, “I think he’s one of the guys who understands coverages at a great level. I think that just goes from, you know who his dad is. He’s been learning coverages for a long time. He’s been around some guys who have taught him a lot, so he understands it. Shedeur understands the game from a whole different lens.” But when Tom Pelissero asked him about what are those things where Shedeur can still work upon, he didn’t surprise anyone.

Darrell Colbert Jr explained, “A lot of things he needs to work on, of course.” He further said, “It gets to a point where you know you’ve been sacked so many times and different things like that you want to be able to get the ball out a little quicker, different things like that. That’s a lot of things that he understands that going into the next level, going into the NFL, that he’ll have to change, that he’ll have to get better at.” And if we take a look at Shedeur’s stats, he was sacked a staggering 42 times last year.
Yeah, all in a single season. Compare that to Cam Ward, and you’ll see a big difference. The defense managed to sack Ward only 22 times in the last season, which is impressive.
Let’s compare their entire college careers as well. The defenders sacked Sanders 152 times. That is 13 more than Ward over the past four years. Some experts point out that Shedeur struggles to move efficiently in the pocket. His arm strength is another area where he needs improvement. Especially as he prepares to be one of the top picks.

Many analysts expect Shedeur to be among the top quarterbacks selected, likely after the Titans draft Cam Ward. Ward’s status as the projected No. 1 pick gained traction when the Titans reportedly didn’t invite Sanders for a private workout. Well, Shedeur also replied to that saying, “Fool not to pick me.” But that’s a story for another day. For now, let’s see what Shedeur’s father — NFL legend Deion Sanders — had to say about the teams eyeing his son for a top draft spot. He even addressed whether or not Shedeur would join the $5.5 billion franchise.

The Colorado Buffaloes coach just said, in his own way, “I like their colors, I like the city, I like the food, I like the people, I like the possibility.” But while saying this, the Cowboys legend also added something more important about Shedeur Sanders: “Shedeur is very smart. You can’t lead the nation in completion percentage if you’re not smart. You can’t lead quarterbacks in the history of the game in completion percentage if you’re not a really smart quarterback.” He also praised his son’s ability to carry the ball.
