Is Jalen Hurts' discomfort with the 'tush push' a sign of bigger problems for the Eagles?

Where do we start with the Eagles, Jalen Hurts, and Nick Sirianni triangle? Dianna Russini recently did a column about the Eagles, and it gained traction in no time. Does Jalen Hurts have a problem with Nick Sirianni, or has he suddenly grown tired of the tush-push shenanigans? Whatever it is, Russini thinks that the Hurts-Sirianni relationship is a “work in progress.”

Nick Wright of the First Things First had some valid concerns about the relationship after a tragic turn the Eagles took last season from a 10-1 start. Throughout his tenure with the Eagles, Jalen Hurts has taken no issues with quarterback sneak. However, things might change in the coming times. At least, Nick Wright thinks so.

“I think Jalen Hurts had more of a problem with the tush push after he got paid”, said Wright and added, “Is that unreasonable for me to think that what a guy who was a second-round pick proving himself in the league is okay doing, didn’t think it was going to all of a sudden be a bigger part of the offense and post him becoming a $50 million a year quarterback?”

Even before the start of the 2023 season, Hurts battled through knee issues and quarterback sneak just exacerbated the whole injury. Getting shoved around like a sack of potatoes would give anyone an injury complex and Hurts is no different. Per some analysts, the tush push has a 92% success rate but the price to pay for it is gruesome.

The Philadelphia team used the move 37 times in the regular season. We know it works because the Eagles were able to score a touchdown or a first down in 34 of those opportunities. Perhaps Jalen Hurts is just tired of not being used to his fullest potential, exploring other strategies as a strong offensive unit. That might also be a cause for a rift between Sirianni and his quarterback.

This is speculation, but Jalen Hurts might have had some misgivings after the Eagles fired Brian Johnson as OC. He was replaced by Kellen Moore this year. However, sources suggest that the offense we were seeing last year was run by Nick Sirianni and Brian Johnson was just a placeholder. The stale, run-of-the-mill offense compromised the team heavily last year. Also, Jalen Hurts had a great relationship with Johnson who joined the Birds after Hurts’ rookie year.

In her article, Dianna Russini while addressing Hurts and Nick Sirianni’s bond, commented, “The relationship is still a work in progress. Last year there was some disconnect between them, due to their personalities. Nick, we’ve seen, is a very emotional guy. Jalen is a very private guy. They are different human beings, which is fine.”

These latest tidbits about Sirianni make more of a case against him. He botched the defensive coordinator position last year after replacing Sean Desai with Matt Patricia too. So, this year, the Eagles have a new OC and a new DC, and Sirianni has had something to do with both. Amidst adjusting to these changes, the crisis of performance also remains with the QB.

Even at the height of his career, Jalen Hurts didn’t break the 4k-yard barrier and his performance has taken a slight hit. A knee injury and a broken finger have also not made matters any easier for him. Now, with the 2024 season a few weeks away, it remains to be seen how the individual game of the QB and his relationship with his HC with unfold in a rather new setting.
