Is Patrick Mahomes the only thing stopping Lamar Jackson from being an all-time great QB?

One of the best quarterbacks in the league right now is Lamar Jackson. So far, the Baltimore Ravens signal-caller has won 2 MVP Awards in his 6 seasons. One unique thing about the young athlete is his records, most of which are first of their kind. To list a few, he is the first quarterback with 5 consecutive seasons of 700-plus rushing yards and the first player with 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. Power-packed!

He is the 2nd youngest QB to win two MVPs after legendary Jim Brown. But analysts still don’t rate him among the top 10 QBs of the league. Shocking! Shannon Sharpe recently appeared on the First Take podcast, where he mentioned the biggest roadblock in Jackson’s entry into the coveted list. Patrick Mahomes!

Sharpe noted, “Lamar Jackson is so accomplished it’s the only thing on his resume that he has not accomplished, which is that signature win in a playoff game over Patrick Mahomes. If he were to get that now we’re talking about something because I think Lamar Jackson when it’s all said and done, he’s already for me if he can get one a signature playoff win over Patrick Mahomes.” Even in 2023, when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, Jackson was awarded MVP with 49 out of 50 votes in his favor. That speaks volumes!

But yes, they lost the AFC Championship game. To whom, any guesses? Chiefs defeated them by 17-10. Hence, crossing the final line is something that the 2-time MVP must be thinking about his off-season. However, Shannon made some more bold comments.

He rated Lamar Jackson as a probable for the top 10 and said, “I think that’s gonna put him in the top 10. He mess around and win a Super Bowl. There’s no telling high high.” When Dan Orlovsky asked he meant top 10 of the current generation or all-time, Sharpe replied, “Top 10 all-time, yes, yes, yes, yes, I think if he gets that playoff because if I think if he can get past Patrick Mahomes I don’t believe anybody else can beat him in the postseason.” Orlovsky was amazed upon hearing this and nodded his head in disbelief. Now that’s the impact of winning crucial matches. While the Ravens QB has won no Super Bowl, the Chiefs QB sits atop with 3 Trophies. The battle for glory is getting interesting.

Both QBs will start their coming season against each other on September 5. Before that, let’s check out the history of both teams. In playoffs, both teams have played only twice. One was last year, and before that, they battled in 2011, which the Ravens won, but then, Jackson was nowhere in their plans. We have listed games for the last 5 years to review recent results.

Clearly, Jackson hasn’t been able to take his team to victory. For now, let’s check how they are preparing for the season opener.

What are Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes doing before the first match in 2024?

The Ravens QB is preparing in silence. His last Instagram post uploaded on August 9, when the team played its first preseason game. Showing his love for the game, he posted photos giving autographs to fans. Aptly captioning the photos, the QB wrote, “Once you stop having fun with it, you done with it💜.” That’s optimistic! it’s better to relax and chill out. Lamar Jackson knows that the next few months will be full of pressure.

The Chiefs QB, on the other hand, is enjoying his times. He recently launched a Prime X Patrick Mahomes limited edition bottle and his first NIL class in partnership with Adidas. Though the Super Bowl winner is dealing with some stress lately, he remains cool. His wife, Brittany’s social media feud over liking Donald Trump’s post and ongoing legal battle of his father over DWI, hasn’t fazed him. A good sign.

While Ravens have nothing to lose, Lamar Jackson will do his best to win. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are eyeing a 3-peat. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment and a desire to achieve the unthinkable, we tend to overdo things. Can Ravens QB make his counterpart falter? The battle is on!
