What’s common between Brock Purdy and CJ Stroud? Both quarterbacks have immense talent, and both are coming off a disheartening loss. What’s uncommon is the fact that one gets more hate than the other. Want to take a guess? We’ll break the ice here and say that people are biased against “Mr. Irrelevant.”
First off, Purdy’s nickname in the NFL is one of the reasons for this misconception. But that’s not the most ridiculous thing about the situation. There happens to exist no CJ Stroud slander after his loss to Aaron Rodgers’ Jets on Thursday Night Football. Check out what the 49ers insider David Lombardi has to say about the bruhaha against Purdy.
“Seems to me already that Stroud is getting a bit of a pass for not just that bad performance, but for four straight bad to mediocre games, while Brock Purdy struggles to get a pass from some people for just one bad game, and Purdy has not had more than one consecutive bad game in his entire career,” Lombardi said in his video on X.

Just hold Brock Purdy and CJ Stroud to the same standard. It shouldn’t be hard pic.twitter.com/P1KuMajRTH
— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) November 1, 2024
Before he said this, he pointed out the game against the Kansas City Chiefs (28-18 Niners loss) where Purdy came out with an abysmal passer rating of 36.7. The QB threw 3 interceptions and no touchdowns. However, he did score two rushing touchdowns. But that game was too unlucky for Purdy, who lost his favorite receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a season-ending injury.
Lombardi thinks that “draftism” has ruined the way we see quarterbacks. Purdy signed a 4-year $3.7 million deal with the 49ers while Stroud makes 10 times the money from his rookie contract with the Texans. Purdy is worth way more than what he’s getting paid right now and the fact that he took his team to the Super Bowl 58 is proof enough.

Is the NFL's bias against 'Mr. Irrelevant' overshadowing Brock Purdy's true potential?
Have an interesting take?
The Niners are where they are because they have a banged-up roster right now. Christian McCaffrey hasn’t played a single game this year. Ricky Pearsall had an encounter with a bullet a couple of months ago. Deebo Samuel’s absence in the game against the Chiefs might have also been the reason behind Purdy’s bad performance.
But things were somewhat the same with CJ Stroud in the game against the New York Jets.
What led to CJ Stroud’s bad performance?
For starters, Stroud was playing without his primary receivers, Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins. On top of that, the Texans were marred with a ton of injuries throughout the game. The LG Kenyon Green got ejected from the game during halftime. Also, the defensive end Will Anderson Jr. left the game with an ankle injury.
What sticks out like a sore thumb is the fact that Stroud took 8 sacks in a single game. Maybe that’s because the Texans had some O-Line issues. However, Stroud completed just 36.7% of his passes, which is a huge regression from the past couple of games. Moreover, he didn’t score a rushing or a passing touchdown in the game either.
Research from a couple of months ago shows that Stroud is reportedly the fifth most sacked QB in the league. However, those numbers might have changed now, but still, we don’t get to hear a lot about it.

Again, if we consider the fact that Stroud makes 10x of what Brock Purdy makes, it might be viable to scrutinize him as such. “If you’re going to be picking and choosing, maybe pick and choose the ones who cost a lot of draft capital to hold to the higher standard versus the one that cost hardly any draft capital who’s only making what $985,000 this year. I think that’d be a more fair way to do it,” Lombardi added to his comments later.
With that being said, both QBs have a lot to look forward to this season. But before you go anywhere, check out how the state of the NFL is changing and how these women are responsible for it.
