From Orange Crush to Crushed Dreams…”Orange Crush” defense earned its name for a reason—tough, versatile, and game-changing. But on Wild Card weekend, a Bills offense that steamrolled Denver drowned any echoes of that dominance out, 31-7. Sean Payton’s squad, after a surprisingly strong season, found themselves out-muscled and outmaneuvered.
What an abrupt end to what felt like a promising resurgence in the Mile High City…
Sean Payton didn’t sugarcoat it: “It’s got to fuel you and light a fire in the direction we need to go.” He pointed out that hosting playoff games, not just scraping into them, has to become the standard in Denver. But Sunday’s loss was a stark reminder of just how far the Broncos are from returning to their glory days. The Bills exposed gaps that Payton and his crew will have to address—and fast.

#Broncos HC Sean Payton on Denver’s loss:
“It’s got to fuel you and light a fire in the direction we need to go.”
He said the Broncos also have to find a way to play these playoff games at home.

Sure, there were flashes of hope, like Bo Nix’s 43-yard opening touchdown to Franklin. But the Bills, with their playoff polish and Josh Allen leading the charge, quickly turned into smoke.
Now for the Broncos, they finished 10-8 and broke an eight-year playoff drought. Well, in hindsight, it’s nice to get some unwanted records out of the way… But let’s call it what it is: this wasn’t the storybook ending fans hoped for. The Broncos hung in early and even kept Allen under 100 passing yards deep into the third quarter. But then all came crashing… And by halftime, the Broncos were left gasping for answers—and points.
Meanwhile, here’s the real sticking point: Denver’s struggles against AFC alpha quarterbacks. Against Allen, Mahomes, Herbert, Jackson, and Burrow this season? A frustrating 0-6. So, if the Broncos want to be more than just postseason participants, they’ll need to figure out how to outwit the league’s elite. Payton knows this.
That’s why his post-game comments weren’t just about the loss. But about setting a new standard—one where hosting playoff games becomes the norm, not a pipe dream.
Now, it’s on to the offseason, and the to-do list is long. The top on the list is Bo Nix as the Broncos need a TE who can give Nix a reliable safety level because he needs it. Call it part of the upgrade!
Sean Payton’s patience pays off with Bo Nix
Bo Nix’s rookie season with the Broncos was, dare I say, one for the books. Tossing 29 touchdowns and racking up 3,775 yards (4K+ would just have been a SHUSH) of offense? Not too shabby for a guy who had skeptics doubting his accuracy and decision-making. And hey, he didn’t just silence the doubters; he flat-out torched their playbook.

As Nix himself put it: “Everybody had my back… My teammates accepted me. Just makes it easier for me to jump ship and play my role.” That kind of trust? It’s what turns rookies into leaders. We saw the numbers—because you can’t ignore them. Oh, and did we mention the Broncos went 10-7, marking their first double-digit win season since 2015? Sure, Sean Payton didn’t let him go full gunslinger right out of the gate. He dialed up plenty of safe throws to help Nix find his groove, especially early on.
But once Payton loosened the reins, we saw glimpses of the dynamic offense Broncos fans have been craving.
Now, about that Wild Card game against Buffalo. A sad one for the team… However, for Nix, individually, it was passing around with the 144 yards and one touchdown. The Bills, though? They forced him to make those brutal, thread-the-needle throws every rookie quarterback dreads.

All in all, Nix’s first year was a win. Sure, he’s no Justin Herbert (though their rookie stats are eerily similar), but he showed he can hang in the NFL. The key now? Building around him. A few more weapons, a stronger O-line, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll be talking about the Broncos making a serious noise in the postseason soon.
