The Denver Broncos are paying nearly $38 million to Russell Wilson after getting rid of him. Wilson’s trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers left the Broncos with the highest dead money ever in the NFL. Now the Denver team is without a quarterback and it’s up to the management, particularly Sean Payton to rectify the whole situation.

The Broncos currently have the 12 overall pick in the first round, and they might have their eyes set on a new QB. Prospects like JJ McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix are some of the players that come to mind when we think about the Broncos’ next move. While we know the importance of hiring new prospects, the Broncos HC is still cautious and is waiting for better things to unfold.

The Denver team recently signed Safety Brandon Jones to a 3-year contract, along with the DT Malcolm Roach for 2 years. Apart from these players and a couple of other re-signs, the Broncos feel confident in their defense and are finally ready to give some thought to the QB position. Denver signed these players because they think their contribution can mean well for the team.

The reporter asked Sean Payton about what the Broncos’ plans are to hire a new QB amidst all the other signings. Per the coach, right now, Payton and his people are looking into free agency, the draft, and trading all alike to find a new QB. The HC is not willing to ignore any of those options right now and is plotting a course for the best possible outcome.

“When the off-season hits and we begin to map out our plans, those plans included you know the current professional ranks which are players in that market and also the rookie class.” Said Payton and added, “We’re kind of in the midst of draft preparation if you will and we’ve been traveling a lot on these Pro Days and these private workouts, so we’ll continue to monitor the pro-market but also get ready for the April Draft.”

Meanwhile, despite the Russell Wilson debacle, the Broncos HC thinks that the team is heading in the right direction with the new choices they have been making.

Nothing is set in stone for the Denver Broncos

While Payton vaguely laid out the plans to the reporter, he never dropped any names and never divulged his actual plans going forward. Amid the QB plans to stay under the shadows, the team re-signed safety PJ Locke, fullback Michael Burton, TE Adam Trautman, and their kicker Will Lutz.

Even though other matters have been out in the open, the HC did not hesitate to mention how this year, unlike the previous year, the team is taking more of a private route to sort out their concerns. The emphasis remained on Payton mentioning how things won’t be made as public initially as they had been the last time around.

Further, Payton just mentioned looking at the pro market for a QB. The point to note remains that free agency names like Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, Gardner Minshew, and Jimmy Garoppolo among others are already taken. With the 12 overall pick in the first round, the chance of them hiring a top-class QB has also become slim, but they can trade for picks to make magic happen. Until then the team might have to keep working on whatever strategies they have.
