One reason why Russell Wilson was ousted from the Denver Broncos is because he didn’t fit Sean Payton’s scheme of things. That’s besides the contractual issues he was facing with the Denver team. Now, the quarterback-needy team is looking for someone who can follow in Sean Payton’s footsteps and alleviate the Broncos’ condition a bit.
Per sources, the Denver team is looking for someone who is very physical, very accurate, and has the correct mental fortitude. The only person to have fulfilled those criteria was Caleb Williams, whom the Broncos might not be able to get their hands on with their 12 overall pick. Brian Baldinger came on to the DNVR Sports podcast to give more insights into the HC’s thought process of dealing with the draft.
Sean Payton has a stringent drafting process

Recognizing the flashy QB class of this year, the host of the show asked Baldinger, “Who do you think is a Sean Payton quarterback? Only one guy can be all six of them, who do you think is a Sean Payton quarterback in this draft?” Baldinger had an answer ready for the question and he explained 2 main criteria that Sean Payton would consider before drafting a QB.
“It’s going to be have to be somebody that is a going to be, A: going to be a gym rat um you know like he’s not going to turn the lights off at night until he totally understands the game plan all the nuance to the game plan.” Said the former NFL OL.
Baldinger expanded further, “He’s going to have to be very accurate with the football because there’s going to be a lot of swing passes to your running back and you know the little um high-low reads to the weak side, all the things that Sean likes to do. And you got to put the ball right in the right spot.”
But the selection process doesn’t stop here, because an in-depth knowledge of the game is also required for the Broncos QB to be.
The Broncos to find someone who understands the game in and out
Per Baldinger, Sean Payton also wants someone who has extensive knowledge of the game and can improvise, knows when to run the ball and when to throw it. He explained, “And then you’re going to have to know everything about everything where you’re going to call the run game at the line of scrimmage based on what the defense is showing you.”

Per the NFL analyst, there’s only one person capable of doing this, and that is Caleb Williams, whom the Chicago Bears will unequivocally draft. Also, other prospects like JJ McCarthy, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye will be long gone by that point.
“And so, you you’re going to have to have all these components to you, and the one guy that has those components they can’t draft because that’s Caleb Williams. And so that’s the one guy to me that has all the things that Sean’s looking for and they’re not going to have a chance to get him.” Added Baldinger to his previous stance.

In theory, finding a perfect QB would not be possible if Sean Payton has narrowed his POV to a certain set of ideas. He would have to be a little flexible and mold himself according to what’s available to him as well. Paying a rookie QB comes with expectations so we can expect the Broncos to take a tour of the market before they settle down on anyone.
