Have the Rams thought about a QB option after Matthew Stafford? There is no doubt that Matthew has a lot of football left in him. The 2024 season showed us that. With Stafford leading the offense, the team made it to the divisional round. But the harsh truth is that the QB won’t be here for long -maybe three or four more years. So, is it time for the Rams to look for a QB who could step into Matthew’s shoes once he hangs up his cleats?
“I think that’s unlikely.” Sean McVay just denied looking for a QB in the draft after he was directly asked about it at the NFL Annual Meetings. “I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t done a whole lot of work on the quarterbacks. I feel really good about where our quarterback room is. Even though we’re not naive to the fact that Matthew hopefully has a couple more years that he wants to play. But he’s also earned the right to be able to say, ‘after this year, hey, I’m gonna go ahead and hang them up,'” the Rams HC said via SI.com.
But here’s the interesting part: Mike Florio is not buying what Sean McVay is selling. That’s right. In a recent episode of NFL on NBC, Mike Florio, along with Chris Simms, offered a different perspective on McVay’s statements at the NFL Annual Meetings. As per Florio, Sean is just trying not to let other franchises know that they’re in the market for a QB. “Incentive to not wear your intention on your sleeve… You don’t want everyone to think you’re out of the quarterback business altogether.”

The NBC host is being skeptical about McVay’s remarks. Because there’s no way you’re the HC, and you haven’t done any work on QBs. Florio believes that, of course, any HC would do some homework, even if they’re not planning to pick one. “Why wouldn’t you look at who’s all available? Because you just might need someone.” Chris Simms echoes the same sentiment, stating, “I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them on this type of stuff. Yes, because I think he’s very capable of playing that game you’re talking about, Mike.“
So, McVay may be playing his cards close to the chest when it comes to the QB position. But, on the other hand, there are clear signs that he’s ready to make adjustments elsewhere, particularly in the offense.

Sean McVay’s plans for offensive overhaul
The Rams fans have often pointed out the team’s inability to bring out the best in WR Tutu Atwell. Tutu has not posted the numbers many expected him to so far in his career. In the latest season, the Louisville alum finished with 562 yards and 42 receptions. But now, this year, Sean McVay is going to change that. At the NFL annual meetings, when the Rams HC was asked about the young WR, he said, “I think the fans are accurate in that I haven’t done a good enough job of utilizing him.“
Atwell’s 2024 season set a new career high. The 25-year-old posted these stats after the Rams used him in different roles. He had little opportunity when Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua were on the field. But when Kupp and Nacua had to be sidelined due to injuries early in the season. Atwell had solid performances in all the games he played as a starter.
What’s your perspective on:
Are the Rams risking their future by not planning for a post-Stafford era?
Have an interesting take?
” I think when you look at his body of work, when he’s been able to play, especially in some of the times that he was playing (like) when Cooper was on IR, there was a lot of production,” said Sean. Giving the young WR his flowers, the HC added, “When you look at the times when he’s been able to play, whether that be because some people were out or not, he has produced. We’re looking forward to seeing more of that ascension.“

McVay assures that this season, Rams fans will get to see more of Atwell on the field. “He’s going to be on the field a lot more, particularly in a lot of those three-receiver sets.” So, this year, Tutu will get more time on the gridiron. And it’ll be interesting to see if he can live up to the high expectations fans have for him. With a bigger role in the offense, he has the chance to prove he’s worth the investment McVay is putting into him.
