Have you forgotten about Green Bay‘s proposal they submitted to the NFL for banning the Eagles‘ infamous tush push? We doubt it. But just in case you have, it’s time to open that chapter again. Philly’s mastered play is currently the hottest topic at the NFL League meetings. And a lot of teams have been pushing for its ban. It’s going to take 24 of 32 votes to eliminate the tush push. Would 24 people agree on the same thing? Well, that’s an interesting question. Meanwhile, Rams HC Sean McVay might have dropped a very interesting nugget about that very question.
A ban on the tush push is not a strange or new demand, it has been debated for the last 2-3 years. This year, the drama started with Green Bay’s GM Brian Gutekunst submitting a proposal to the league. The Packers lost to Philly twice last season. Now, on Tuesday, the owners of 32 teams will vote to decide the fate of Philly’s infamous play. And just in case you’re wondering whether there will be a possible ban or not, Sean McVay has already dropped some tidbits about the potential outcome. In an interview with Pro Football Talk‘s Mike Florio, the Rams HC talked about the challenges the league might face in banning it.

McVay shared that the league has been talking about the details of the tush push. They’re making sure it’s clearly understood and called by referees. But he also admits that it’s tough to enforce a rule about it. Because there are a lot of small, tricky details that the league needs to figure out to make it fair and clear for everyone. “What I understand from Green Bay’s proposal is it’s specifically that play, in regards to the immediate push right behind the center… But then, you know, it does open up some other things. And the consistency across, you have an appreciation for the challenges.“
The Rams HC thinks that any potential changes to the Jalen Hurts-fueled Eagles’ skilled play are unlikely to happen immediately, like Green Bay wants them to. “I think that might be something that we would visit a year from now. Or maybe even when the owners meet again in May. But for tomorrow. I don’t necessarily think that’s a direction.“
The Rams HC also clarified his stance, stating which side he was on in this entire debate.

What Sean McVay thinks about the tush push?
Until now, coaches from all 32 teams have offered their opinions on the tush push. Some favor it, while others want it gone. Then, some see both sides and are conflicted about reaching a conclusion. Sean McVay is one of those who is kind of in a dilemma about making a decision. During his conversation with Mike Florio, the 39-year-old shared, “I don’t, and I told these guys this. I don’t believe in taking something out because they do it better than anybody else. And I told both [Eagles assistant general manager Jon Ferrari] and [Eagles GM Howie Roseman] that when we were talking yesterday.“
McVay also admits that he does not like the look of the play, as it “looks like a rugby scrum.” And like some of the coaches’ arguments out there, there are health and safety concerns. Interestingly, there is not enough evidence to back up the claim that the Eagles‘ play could risk players’ health. There were no injuries reported due to the tush push in 2024, according to NFL EVP Troy Vincent.
“I’m kind of conflicted because you don’t wanna be a hater because they do it better than anybody else, so I don’t agree with that. But I also wish we didn’t let the play in in the first place in regards to just the optics of what it looks like. Doesn’t look like football to me,” added McVay. So, now it will all depend on whether or not the NFL owners can secure 24 votes if they want to get rid of the tush push. And getting 24 people to agree on the same thing, well… that’s kind of tough. The Rams HC thinks the vote could end up being 50/50, which would make it hard to pass any change.
