The Buffalo Bills had a pretty good season this time. They were crowned the AFC East title with 13 wins and 4 losses in the regular season. However, reaching so close to the Super Bowl and losing in the Championship definitely stings. And now unlike many other teams, it seems head coach Sean McDermott couldn’t move on from that upset. He had something still left in for Josh Allen and team which he omitted recently.

On Monday, Sean McDermott appeared in the NFL Combine press conference and talked about what went wrong on Sunday, January 26. He said, “Well, without getting too much into strategy and whatnot, I am a believer in that speed. Stretching the field not just vertically, but horizontally and vertically (both), I think it just opens up a defense. And so I thought we did that at times, probably not enough this year.” McDermott’s statements subtly critique Bills’s offensive approach.

With this, the HC suggested that Josh Allen and his team should have been more aggressive in creating space and explosive plays. “I thought we did that at times, probably not enough this year.” – That’s where he indirectly throws the Bills’s offense under the bus. Not only that! Along with these lines, Sean McDermott even expressed, “And not just, you know, throwing the ball deep, it doesn’t always mean that. It means taking a short pass and taking it, you know, and some good rack yards for us in production. So I thought overall, we did some good things in that wide receiver room.”

According to Sean McDermott, the Bills’s offensive approach was lacking as they didn’t utilize speed and field-stretching enough. He even suggested that Josh Allen’s offense failed to maximize big play opportunities, whether through deep shots or turning short passes into significant gains with yards after the catch.

However, that doesn’t mean Sean McDermott had only critics for his quarterback and the team. During the same presser, the HC also expressed his faith in his Bills, especially Josh Allen. While comparing Jalen Hurts and Allen, he expressed,The way he’s played on the field this season, the way he’s matured off the field, on the field, his decision making and how that’s improved. So all these areas that were perceived call it gaps, Josh has answered those gaps, and he’s closed those gaps. And when you do that at the level that he did it at on a consistent basis, the result was the MVP and so to me, as I said during the year later in the year in particular, he deserved that, every bit of that award.”

Sean McDermott and Josh Allen’s Bills lost to the Chiefs 32-29 in the AFC Championship. And it’s pretty clear the wound is still fresh. Nevertheless, he is still happy to see his quarterback achieving the MVP this year. And why shouldn’t he? Afterall, Allen proved his game by covering 3731 yards with 28 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions in 17 games. That’s pretty interesting!

So, now as the 2025 season will be coming up next in September, the Bills have at least started working on their team’s modification.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Josh Allen being held back by the Bills' strategy, or is McDermott right to call for change?

Sean McDermott fills the much-needed gap!

There is no doubt about it that the Bills had a tough time regarding their kicking game and returning game. That’s the reason they were ranked 26th in average kickoff return yards at 25.9, and neither their kickoff or punt teams managed to score a touchdown. Hence, they fired Matthew Smiley in early February. So, it was obvious for them to hire an experienced coach. And guess what? Sean McDermott and his team’s hunting process for the role is over now.

The latest move the franchise made is to bring Chris Tabor as the team’s special teams coordinator. To the people who are unaware, Tabor actually has an experience of more than 15 years. After being special teams coordinator for Panthers in 2023, last year Tabor sat out the last season. However, now he has some important work to do with the Bills as he will be under close scrutiny.

Along with him, Sean McDermott also brought in Ryan Nielsen for senior defensive assistant, Jason Rebrovich for assistant defensive line, and Mike Pellegrino for nickels.
