“That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days, was not taking Josh,” said Josh Elway in July last year. He was right. This year, the Bills QB single-handedly took his team to the playoffs. He recorded 3 passing and 3 rushing TDs against Rams in week 11, the first player to do so, but lost. The very next game, he led them to defeat the dominant Lions. His rise in the league has been marginal, shutting everyone who doubted him.
While talking to the reporters on Wednesday, January 8th, the Bills HC Sean McDermott praised the quarterback. He called the franchise lucky to have the quarterback and said, “We’re fortunate that we have Josh Allen, and he’s been really good for us. He’s a great person not just on the field but he’s out in the community and making an impact in our community.” That’s super sweet.

At Buffalo, Josh Allen is the superstar. And this year has been crazy. He has been a one-man army in the regular season. In 17 games in 2024, he has 28 passing touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His rushing game is equally strong with 12 rushing TDs. During the week 17 game against the NY Jets, he completed 65th rushing TD of his career, tied with Thurman Thomas.
Playing in his 5th consecutive 40+ TDs season, the Bills QB got engaged to his actress girlfriend, Hailee Steinfeld, in November. So, he is extra motivated to win the Super Bowl. His teammate and LB, Von Miller, also claimed that Josh Allen proved John Elway and all other critics wrong. His 2-word reply “It’s crazy” was enough to show how much Allen has improved.
However, the linebacker spoke from an outsider lens. He was at Broncos in 2018 when the Bills drafted the quarterback. His journey has been adventurous.
Josh Allen’s HC and teammate reveal the legend’s regret
While talking about Josh Allen, Miller revealed that the legend must have been caught in the choices he had. He also got the option to hire Kyle Shanahan as the head coach. While highlighting the QB’s journey, he added, “Seeing what Josh Allen is and what he panned out to be and what he still can be. I think any GM that passed him up in that draft was like, man, we could have got him.” Almost everyone agrees on this part. Elway chose Bradley Chubb in the 1st round.

Even the HC Sean McDermott echoed a similar sentiment. When asked his views about John Elway’s regret about Josh Allen, he replied, “I’m sure there’s a lot of people with those regrets.” That’s hilarious. The Bills selected him 7th overall. And his journey has been amazing.

However, Josh Allen also needs to prove that he was made for the big stage. It’s his 6th consecutive playoff season. But in 5 playoff seasons, he hasn’t qualified for the Super Bowl even once. They play Broncos at Highmark Stadium on Sunday, January 12th. This year is crucial.
