Before Mike Macdonald took over, the Seahawks were a playoff regular—10 trips in 14 years and five division titles. Pretty solid, right? But Macdonald’s first year didn’t quite live up to that standard. With Geno Smith leading the way, Seattle fell just a few wins short of the playoffs in 2024. That sparked a whole lot of questions about Smith’s future. He’s 34 now, heading into the last year of his contract, and plenty of people started wondering—would he retire? Would the Seahawks move on? Or was he still their guy?
But things in Seattle are expected to settle down. When Mike Macdonald was asked if Smith would be back next year or not, he rightly answered, “I’ve got no reason to say no. So I guess, yeah.” Meanwhile, Geno Smith has received praise from the newly hired offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak which settles the dust down for sure. When Kubiak was asked about the newly taken job, he didn’t flinch to say Geno Smith was a “huge draw” while thinking about this job.
Klint Kubiak says being able to coach Geno Smith was a huge draw in him coming to Seattle.

He didn’t stop there and described several qualities of Mike Macdonald’s QB. The new OC said, “Geno’s a very aggressive player. Has a lot of production. Obviously, he’s been doing it for a long time. He’s overcome a lot in his career. I have a lot of respect for Geno.” He also added, “We have high expectations for him. We’re going to push Geno and get the best out of him, and we’ll do that by pushing his teammates, as well. It’s not just his show. It’s a team thing, and he’s got to be the head of that.” This debate has started because the QB has entered his final year of contract.
Macdonald’s QB has signed an extension deal of $75,000,000 for three years in 2023, out of which $40 million is guaranteed. In 2025, Smith’s base salary will be $14,800,000 and the roster bonus of $16,000,000. And if this was not enough, he would carry a cap hit of $44,500,000. The numbers are so huge that very few teams can afford it. However, the question over his continuation is no longer alive as HC Mike Macdonald has clarified.
But hold on… another big news has hit the Seahawks headquarters after Klint Kubiak’s shower of compliments on Smith. Wanna know what the latest update is, let’s dive in!
Mike MacDonald’s hired three coaches under Klint Kubiak
After Klint Kubiak’s successful hiring, Mike Macdonald has hired three more coaches to assist the offensive coordinator. The NFL’s news division and the Seahawks organization have revealed that John Benton has been hired as offensive line coach. Other than him, Andrew Janocko will be the quarterbacks coach, which is great news for Geno Smith. And Michael Byrne has been selected as an offensive assistant to assist Klint Kubiak.

Talk about Andrew Janocko first. He has exclusive experience coaching quarterbacks since 2021. In 2021, Mike Macdonald’s new QB coach was working with the Vikings. Then, for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Janocko worked for the Chicago Bears as a quarterbacks coach before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2024. Apart from the quarterbacks coach, Michael Byrne, the newly hired offensive assistant, has experience working with Klint Kubiak when they were in New Orleans. He was also a quarterback at Pacific Lutheran University.

And lastly, John Benton has quite a lot of experience as an offensive line coach. After parting ways with Colorado State as an O-line coach in 2002, he worked for the Rams, the Texans, and the Dolphins. And as an assistant offensive line coach, he was with the Jaguars (2016). Since then, John Benton has worked for the 49ers, the Jets, and the Saints before joining Mike Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks. So, the stage is set for the offseason and the upcoming NFL season, let’s see how the Seahawks will perform!
